Note: Obituary Joseph W Eaton was born in La Porte county Indiana, July 14 1850. He was married to rachel Osborne Dec 30th 1873. In 1883 he moved to Hamilton county, Nebraska, and lived ten years on a farm. In 1893, to give his children a chance for an education he moved to Aurora and for a time engaged in the real estate business, then into the implement business for a while, finally going back to the real estate business, in which he became quite prominent, and at the same time gaining the confidence of those with whom he dealt, thus making the reputation of a strictly honest and conscientious business man. In December 1885 at Monroe Center, Nebr., he was converted and joined the church of the United Brethren in Christ and was one of its most worthy and efficient members, and when he moved to Aurora, he and his family became the nucleus around which a few people gathered and organized the First United Brethren church of this city, in which he has always been identified with every forward movement of the church. He was elected a member of the first board of trustees and served acceptably in that capacity until his death. He has never been without an official position since the church was organized, serving as class steward, class leader and at the time of his death was teacher of the best bible class in the Sunday School, it was mainly through his untiring efforts that the class reached this standard of proficiency. As lay delegate he has represented the church at the annual conference, and in 1900 was elected as a delegate to and attended the general conference which met in May 1901, at Frederick City, MD. The movement for a new church home, which was started some time ago, was agitated by him, and he was the first to subscribe $500 toward it. The thought of a new church was inspiring to him and so deeply interested was he that he frequently spoke of the matter, and also secured a number of good subscriptions from his friends. On Sunday, Oct 17th, though feeling somewhat indisposed, he was present at church, taught his class as usual and took an active part in the Rally Day services, making an appropriate and fitting speech. In the evening he was present at the young people's meeting, offered a very fervent prayer, and took a leading part in the discussion of the topic. At the close of the preaching service, he turned out the lights, closed the church door, not knowing that he would never again enter the church. On Tuesday he was confined to his bed, and called a physician who found him suffering from an attack of la grippe, but anticipated no serious results; a little later symptoms of typhoid fever appeared, but did not develop, then a complication of diseases began preying upon his system and on Sunday morning, Oct 31, at 10 o'clock, his spirit passed into the realm of the great beyond, to be forever with its God. He leaves to mourn his departure a number of near relative, and a large circle of sorrowing friends. He leaves a family consisting of a wife and six children, two having preceded him, Willie died twenty-two years ago at the age of thirteen, and was buried in the Richland cemetery, and Mertie died twenty-eight years ago, at the age of five, and was buried in Indiana. The children living are: Guy C., Childress, Texas, Lewis N., Lincoln, Neb., Roy H. at home, Inez M., Peru, Nebr., and Frank and Florence at home.
