Note: N17 SSDI says died 15 May 1966. Was a 32nd Degree Mason. Opened the first candy store named The Chocolate Shop in May 1909 with brother George in the Hamilton Building next to the Hall of Records at 1665 Chester Avenue. In 1914 brother George moved to Taft, Kern County, California. In 1915 the building was sold to Arthur H. Dalton, J H working for him during that year. From 1916 -1918 he was employed by the Bakersfield and Kern Electric Railway, first as a carman, then as a conductor. In 1919 he was a clerk for Duncan and Company. In 1920 he bought another candy store with Luther Elliot at 948 Baker Street in East Bakersfield, Kern County, California. He bought out the Elliots in 1921 and operated under the Dewar name at three Baker Street locations. He moved to present location at 1120 Eye Street in 1930. Mary Ellen Baker Smith called him "Uncle Harve". Didn't attend Mom & Daddy's wedding because he didn't like the fact that Daddy was a "half breed" (good half English and the wrong half being Italian). 1900 Census says his name was Grace and he was a daughter. Was named De War and was a single candy maker at a confectionery store and lived at brother George and Ethel's house at 170_ (?) Chester Avenue in Bakersfield, Kern County, California in 1910. Was a rancher and lived with wife at 1216 11th Street in Bakersfield, Kern County, California in 1910-1916. Was a candymaker and lived with mother at 1216 11th Street in Bakersfield, California in 1914. Was a street car conductor for San Joaquin Light & Power Company and lived with wife at 1216 11th Street in Bakersfield, California in 1918. He almost married a nurse in Glendive, Dawson County, Montana. He sent his mother a postcard from there on 19 Nov 1908. They then went To Tacoma, Washington where they bought a bakery. Tiring of the early hours, they went to Los Angeles. Soon after, they moved to Bakersfield and bought a candy store which was next (north side) to the Hall of Records on Chester Avenue. Was a confectionery/farmer and lived with wife and 3 kids in Township #19 (Fruitvale), Kern County, California and spelled name DeWar in 1920. Was a candy manufacturer and lived at Box 395 in Fruitvale precinct, Kern County, California in 1920. Was a confectioner and lived at 725 Niles Street in Bakersfield, California in 1921.
