They were prosperous in all things. Mrs Harley was a goodwoman, the mother of thirteen children, many of whom are living in Defiance and Toledo. A brother Alexander Harley came a little later. His wife was a widow Brobst. A grandson is Frank Brobst of the Hollenden. A son, Orlando Harley, is the tenor of worldwide reputation." From "History of Defiance County, Ohio" Chicago: 1883, reprinted 1976, article on Christian Harley, pg 253: "Christian Harley, retired merchant, Defiance, was born in Grand Duchy of Baden, Germany, in 1822, and is a son of John and (Bertch) Harley, who emigrated to this country in 1835, and located in Columbiana County, Ohio, on a farm for some years, then removed to Crawford County, Ohio, where they died. They were the parents of four children, viz.; John, Alexander, Jacob, and our subject..."(Christian was a prominent merchant/grocer in Defiance County)
