Alexander Wilson was named after his father, and his uncle Alexander Dowd. His family left Chatham Co NC for TN when he was still an infant and it probably never ocurred to them that he would return to Chatham Co 25 years later. He was raised and lived in southwest TN until his mid 20s. His mother died in 1851 and in his grandfather's, Richard Dowd's, will (6 May 1851 bk C pg 426 Pittsboro, Chatham Co NC) his estate was to be divided among his children and his daughter Sarah's children. About 1856 Alexander and his 16 year-old brother, Richard Lewellin, left Hardin Co on horseback for the 500 miles trip to NC. Alexander farmed the land he inherited from his grandfather in Chatham Co and married Officia Dowd in 1859. It is not known if they had any children before her early death. Alex then married Lydia Womble in 1861 and had two children before she passed away before 1869. Alexander was the Captain of Co E of the 2nd Regiment of Chatham and Rowan counties in the NC Militia, a Home Guard unit. Alexander's next wife was a widow with one child, Susan Andrew Williams. They had 9 children and operated a small store in Worthville for 16 years and most of thier children worked at the cotton mill there.
