  <p style="text-align: left; ">Richard Lewellin came to Chatham Co with his brother, Alexander Wilson, from Hardin Co TN in 1856 when he was 16 years old. He and Alexander, both single, are found on the 1860 census in Chatham Co.
  On 22 Jun 1861 he joined Co E of the 26th NC Regiment of the Confederate Army. In 1863 it was transferred to the Army of Virginia and Richard survived the Battle Of Gettysburg 1 - 3 Jul 1863. In the Battle of Bristoe Station Richard was seriously wonded. He remained in the Richmond VA hospital until the fall of Richmond 3 Apr 1865. Richard was captured and to Newport News VA and released Jun 1865. He was crippled the remainder of his life.
  Richard had inherited 100ac of land from his grandfather, Richard Dowd's estate, married after the war, and lived there with his wife. He later purchased the shares of his bothers in TN and lived on the farm until he died. The farm was passed on to his son, Abner Bright, then Abner's only son, Clifton. After Clifton died in 1972, the 150 year old farm passed out of the Dowd, Jenkins family.
  Richard was buried in the nearby Elkins family graveyard in 1880. Elizabeth died 50 years later and buried at the Bethany Baptis Church cemetery in Gulf NC. His remains were later transferred to the Bethany cemetery
