Notes
a. Note:   chliffe) Kemp, Joseph was born on Nov. 21, 1815. His birth more than likely took place in Ameliasburg Township, Prince Edward County, where he married Mary Ann Cunningham on Dec. 19th, 1837. Joseph & his family moved from Prince Edward County, to Percy Tp. Northumberland County, sometime between 1838 & 1844. Twelve children were born to Joseph and Mary Ann between 1838 & 1859. Joseph Kemp was a Farmer by occupation but in later years he was also described as a carpenter and a mill wright. It is interesting to note that on an Assessment Roll for the District of Northumberland & Durham, for Percy Tp., 1857, Joseph Kemp, age 42, was recorded living on Con. 2 WP Lot 10, on 50 acres. Also shown for parts of Con. 2 Lot 10 E1/2 were listed John Kemp, age 67, 1/2 acre, & James Kemp, 100 acres. The latter would have been Joseph's father and brother. I remember reading on a census record that Joseph, Mary Ann and their 12 children all lived in a two room log cabin. I can't begin to imagine how this could have been done. By 1861, Joseph & his family had moved to Hastings County & were living in Tudor Township, Gunter, Ontario, where they lived to a ripe old age. The youngest two children of Joseph were twins who were recorded as being born in Percy Tp., Northumberland County in 1859; therefore, the conclusion can be reached that the family moved from Percy Tp. to Tudor Tp., Hastings County, sometime between 1859 & 1861. Joseph's father, John Kemp had died in Percy Tp. in 1861 & was buried in the Warkworth Cemetery with his wife, Eleanor, who died in 1864. Beside the grave of John & Eleanor Kemp are two young daughters of James Kemp, Joseph's brother. Joseph more than likely moved his family to Percy Tp. because around that time the government offered free land, under the Free Land and Homestead Act, & several of his Gunter relatives and acquaintances had decided to move to that area in 1856. In a book entitled "Historic Hastings", the Kemps & Gunters were recorded as being among the earliest settlers. I had a writeup given to me by Lorrie Minshall of Caledonia, Ontario, as provided to her from Mr. Thomas Shearer of Palmyra, N.Y. This memoir was written by Rev. Samuel T. Gunter [son of Louisa Kemp & Ephraim Gunter; grandson of Joseph Kemp]: "Joseph Kemp was born in 1815. Grandfather was a stately man, though small in stature, an Englishman of the old school, quiet & civil-mannered. He was the father of twelve children, all of whom were good singers, & some could play on instruments. By trade Grandfather was a carpenter & mill-wright, & he owned & operated a small lumber mill located at the foot of Gunter Lake, where he sawed lumber for the settlers to build their homes. On the back of his place, an ore mine was opened, & he received $600. for his share. On his 91st birthday, he told me that he had hidden the money in the back of the stone furnace, in a little niche among the stones, & someone had stole it. He was grieved about the theft, but had never mentioned it before. In 1906, both Grandfather & Grandmother died". Joseph's obituary appeared in the North Hastings Review newspaper, Thursday, Feb. 7, 1907 issue.

Death per Office of the Registrar General, R.G.80-8 registration #013807. This names his place of birth as being Percy Tp. (informant was his son, Jacob) but I believe this is an error since he did not move to the Percy Tp. area until between 1837 & 1844, as is shown in the sources above. The death certificate states that he died in Tudor Tp. on Jan 25 1907 and that he was 92 yrs. of age; therefore, again placing his year of birth at 1815. Residence: Lot 5 Con. 4 Cashel Tp.
