The 1900 Census said born 1894; he died in 1940 & the autoposy said he was 48 which would make his birth at 1892. My mother had written in her book that Richard was born on Dec. 23, 1894 on a Sunday. His tombstone says 1892 and other records have his birth as Dec 22.
Richard died of a massive heart attack while on a ship in Lake Erie. Mom said that Richard's mother died & his father remarried. Richard did not care for his step-mother so decided to leave home by joining the navy. He joined up at about 15 or 16 yrs. of age & travelled on his ship all around the world & became a merchant marine. He was away at sea a lot of the time & was only home about one month a year. He became a friend of my Uncle Charlie Dobson & initially had dated Aunt Mancil while he was in dock at New Carlisle, however he ended up liking my grandmother, Rena, and married her. My mother was born 9 months later.

Y. Wanted There Charged With Rifling Shopkeeper's Till -His First Arrest, Says Detective. Detective John Morrell, of the Central Office, New York city, arrived today with Richard Van Saders, who was arrested in First st. Thursday afternoon by Patrolman Fred Sweet. Van Saders is wanted in New York on a charge of highway robbery, first degree, and his description has been sent broadcast throughout the country. Detective Morrell stated this morning that Van Saders was formerly employed by The Erie railroad as a detective, and his home is in Little Ferry, NJ. Early on the evening of March 16, in company with Joseph Matchok, of Hackensack, N. J . , Van Saders entered the store of Rinaldo Sanolo, at 552 Vaness Ave., Bronx, and drawing a revolver, ordered Sanolo to throw up his hands and come out from behind the counter. Sanolo obeyed, and while Van Saders kept the gun trained on him, Matchok rifled the till, which contained about $40. Both men ran from the store, but Sanolo recovered from his fright and gave the alarm. A crowd gave chase to the highwaymen, and Matchok was run to earth in the basement of a tenement house. One pursuer caught up with Van Saders, but on account of the man's great strength, was unable to hold him until help arrived, and Van Saders escaped. The police were furnished with his description, however and one of the circulars reached this city about a week ago. Van Saders had been working for a short time in the Peter's Chocolate Works, but more recently went to work in the woolen mills.... He left his job there Tuesday night, and was preparing to leave town when he passed Officer Sweet on Thursday. The officer noticed that the man fit with the description furnished by the New York police, and accosted him on the pretence of an aquaintanship.. Van Saders' suspicions were not aroused, and when Sweet offered to take him to a man who could give him a job, VanSaders willingly accompanied the officer. Sweet led him to City Hall, where he was identified by Chief Dyer and locked up. Detective Morrell said today that Van Saders comes of a good family, and has never been arrested before as far as the New York authorities know. His companion, Matchok, who was captured, was recently sentenced to Elmira Reformatory by Judge Gibbs in the Bronx county court.
