John Harvey Gunter, one of the pioneer brothers, was the first post master, 1883-1901. Source: Places in Ontario, Nick & Helma Mika: Cashel Township was surveyed in 1860 by Mr. Henry A. Macleod. The place was originally named after four Gunter brothers. There was some lumbering carried out in the township as early as 1860, but it remained of limited importance. A lead mine was the only major mining development. The township's first schoolhouse was built in 1865. In the 1870's Mr. James Cunningham operated the first water-powered mill in the area. Agriculture and timbering operations have been the mainstay for permanent residents.
