Note: h Town Historical Society: The first Cunninghams mentioned in this family are George Cunningham (1774-1843), John and Robert. They came from County Fermanagh, Ireland in 1792 to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and on to Canada, circa 1795. George applied for and was granted land in Haldimand, but lost it to land agents. He helped Peter Smith from 1795 to 1798 and received a new grant for lot 71, Concession 1, Ameliasburgh. This is the original Cunningham homestead where a descendant, Marilyn Adams lives now. The pioneer George Cunningham married 1. Catherine Crouter (1786-1827) and 2. Catherine Campbell. The children were: Henry Cunningham (1805-1877) m. Sarah Weese (1803-1875) - George Cunningham (1810-1885) m. Phoebe Babcock (1812-1869) - James Cunningham (1813) m. Elizabeth Wallbridge (1819-1894) - Thomas Cunningham (1824) - Mary Cunningham (1816-1808) ( I think they must have meant 1908) - Jane Cunningham (1816-1840) m. John Babcock (1811-1895) - Elizabeth (Bessie) (1819) m. George. On W.D. Reid's Sons & Daughters book, Robert Cunningham, wife of Margaret Frederick, is down as residing in Thurlow Tp., Hastings County. Margaret's Order in Council was June 14, 1811 Note: Joseph Kemp & Mary Ann Cunningham Kemp lived on Con. 4 Lot 9 Percy Tp. whereas Robert & Margaret Cunningham lived on the lot next door, Con. 4 Lot 10. This is one of my biggest reasons why I believe that Mary Ann was their daughter. 1842 Census Records, Northumberland County, Film C1344, Hamilton Public Library: Percy Tp., Robert Cunningham, Con. 4 Lot 10. Assessment Roll, Northumberland & Durham District, Percy Tp., Reel #10: 1848 - Robert Cunningham, Con. 4 Lot 10, a male married 60 & up; 1 female married 45 & up. (Source: Bob Kemp, Peterborough). 1852 Census records, Northumberland County, Ontario, Film C11739, Hamilton Public Library: 229 - Percy Tp., Part 2, pg. 99, line 49, Robert Cunningham, Age 65, born U.S., Religion E. Methodist Yeoman; Mary, 56, born Canada, Religion E. Methodist; Agricultural Census, pg. 85, line 11, Robert Cunningham, Con. 4 Lot 10. There were a total of 12 Cunninghams, other than Robert & Margaret, listed in Percy Tp. on this 1852 Census. They were all listed on Part 2 Percy Tp., pg. 113 as follows: Thomas Cunningham, Labourer, b. Canada, E. Methodist, 19 Jane Cunningham, b. Canada, E. Methodist, 16 Jas. Cunningham, Labourer, b. Canada, E. Methodist, 12 (my note- James Earl?) Henry Cunningham, Carpenter, b. Canada, E. Methodist, 34 Elizth Cunningham, b. Canada, E. Methodist, 26 A. Cunningham, b. Canada, E. Methodist, 9 Jos.or Jas. Cunningham, b. Canada, E. Methodist, 7 Robt Cunningham, b. Canada, E. Methodist, 4 Mary Cunningham, b. Canada, E. Methodist, 1 Further down this page is listed John Masters & his wife & daughter. His wife was Ann/Amy, age 23. This is significant for two reasons, first of all Ann/Amy was a Cunningham per her children's marriage registers, and secondly because it was John Masters who was the informant on Margaret Cunningham's death register. Immediately below the Masters family was listed: Joseph Cunningham, Yeoman, b. Canada, E. Methodist, 27 Caroline Cunningham, b. Canada, E. Methodist, 22 Thos. Cunningham, b. Canada, E. Methodist, 2 1861 Census Records, Film C1055, Hamilton Public Library: 264 - Northumberland County, Ontario, Cramahe Tp., Dist. 2, pg. 15, Robert Cunningham, Age 76; Margaret, Age 66.
