Below we will track the descendants of Willem van Seeters through Trijntje van Seters where the families Lokker and van Seeters joined. My goal is to record, for our extended family, a history of their roots and to extend an invitation to all to avail themselves of the information gathered so far. I hope others in the family will carry on this endeavor. I extend an invitation to all who visit this site to avail themselves of any information that may help in their quests. Additions, corrections and queries are always welcome. First Generation 1. Willem van Seeters. Born in 1795 in Stellendam, Netherlands. This census also said they had been in the country for 46 yrs making their immigration date about 1854. Both Richard & Johanna were born in Holland & were not born in 1833 so they could not have immigrated then. The 1900 Census said they were married for 46 yrs making their marriage about 1854; the 1910 Census said married 56 yrs so this agrees with the 1900 Census. If so, Johanna was only 15 when she married. The 1910 Census said they immigrated in 1865, also an error since they were on the 1860 Census. Regarding immigration: Ellis Island was only functioning between 1892 and 1925-26. That's why you find no records prior to 1892. Before Ellis Island the immigration service used a place originally called Castle Clinton or Fort Clinton. The name was then changed to Castle Gardens and that was the point of entry for most immigrants coming from Europe to New York. There is a Castle Gardens website which is similar to Ellis Island and although I believe they are still adding records, it begins somewhere around 1830. http://www.castlegarden.org should take you to the place where you can search surnames. There were a number of other ports of entry around the country, so don't just focus on New York. I believe Boston, Philadelphia, New Orleans, Seattle and others where there are large seaports also screened immigrants. However, Castle Gardens and Ellis Island were the largest, probably because the big influx was from Europe, especially during the Irish potato famine and other continental calamities. 1860 US Census Records, p. 25, 10 July, 1860, Lodi Township, Bergen County, New Jersey- Richard Van Sader, 24, born Holland, Personal estate valued at $25.00; Johannah, 21, born Holland; William, 1/12, born New Jersey There is also this on the index- 1860 US Census, Hackensack, NJ Derrick Vanseeters, 26 Uhoanna Quaman, 20 William Quaman, 1.12 1870 US Census Lodi Tp., Bergen, NJ (spelling is way off but this is the correct family) Derrick VanPaterus, 33, Laborer, b.
