Obituary, Canadian Christian Advocate Newspaper, P.S. BX8251A30C, Reel 14, January 26, 1859 - Dec. 28, 1864, United Church Archives, Toronto: June 12, 1861, pg. 4, Cols. 3 & 4: John Kemp, the subject of this brief memoir was born in Canada in the Township of Fredericksburgh, October 4, 1788. He was united in marriage to Ellis Hike, widow of Robert Hike, on the 1st of January, 1814; was brought to a knowledge of God by the remission of his sins under the labors of Bro. Henry Ryan in 1828, and immediately connected himself with the M.E. Church, in which he remained a consistent member until his death. He was blessed with four sons and two daughters, lived to see them comfortably situated in life, the most of whom profess to be seeking a house in heaven. In the Spring of 1847 he removed to the Township of Percy where he spent his last days. His parting counsels & admonitions to his wife & children were of deep interest, well calculated, under God to lead them to a more full & entire consecration of themselves unto His service. His confidence remained firm until death. His numerous expressions of joy & confidence in his Savior were clear & forcible. Not a doubt appeared to trouble his mind. After having bid farewell to wife & children, he fell asleep in Jesus, on the evening of the 25th of May, in the 73rd year of his age. His funeral was largely attended; conducted by the writer. B.W. Blanchard, Percy, May 30, 1861.
