Notes
a. Continued:   Mary "Polly" (Roberts) Collins-Frederick or Jude was a daughter of Jacob Roberts and Olive (Stotts) who was a daughter of Andrew and Mary Ann Stotts of the New River Valley in Virginia near Reed Creek in Wythe County. Mary "Polly" (Roberts) married an unidentified man with the surname Collins and she was identified on the 1830 Pike Co., KY census as "Polly Collins" before she later married Peter Jude in 1831 who was also known as Peter Frederick. The 1830 census shows the household had 2 males under 5 and 1 female 20-30 and suggests Mary was born about 1805. Information also suggests Mary's second husband Peter Frederick or Jude died about 1837.
The following entry is found in the Pike Co., KY order book B 3-18 covering years 1831-1843:
"Ordered that a spa [subpoena] be awarded against Joseph Bevins Thomas Cannaday John Jones & Mary Fredrick to appear hear at our September term to show cause why Jacob Fredrick Collins [x's crossed over the name Frederick] Andrew Collins James Collins John Fredrick and Olley Fredrick poor children shall not be bound out according to law."
The exact date of this entry is not identified, but information suggests it was about 1837 which was a midpoint of the years covered in the order book between 1831 and 1843. The subpoena or order didn't include Mary's daughter Nancy Jude which suggests the date of the order was before Nancy was born in 1837. In conclusion, Mary "Polly" (Roberts) Collins-Frederick or Jude had two husbands who both died before she did. Her first husband whose last name was Collins remains unidentified and died before the 1830 census. Her second husband was Peter Frederick or Jude who died about 1837. Mary "Polly" (Roberts) Collins-Frederick or Jude who was identified on the aforementioned order entry as "Mary Fredrick" was probably a widow and apparently could not support her children on her own after her husband Peter died about 1837. During this era following the death of a husband, it was a common practice when a court would subpoena a widow to show whether she could financially support her children. If she was unable to do so, her children would be bound out or given away to others to be raised. Evidently, she was able to keep some of her Frederick or Jude children including Olley mentioned above and moved in with her mother Olive "Ollie" (Stotts) Roberts. This is supported by the 1840 Russell Co., VA census which suggests Mary was living with her mother Olive "Olley" Roberts. The census shows the household included 1m <5, 3f <5, 1f 5-10, 2f 20-30, 1f 30-40 and 1f 70-80. Since "Olley Roberts" was listed as the head of the household, that suggests her husband Jacob Roberts probably died before 1840. The household could have included Mary and her daughters Olly Jude and Nancy Jude as well as her son John Jude. The 1850 Russell Co., VA census also confirms Mary moved in with her mother Olive (Stotts) Roberts since the following 1850 Russell Co., VA census entry shows Mary was identified as "Polly Jude" and was head of the household which also included her mother Olive "Ollie" (Stotts) Roberts:
1850 Russell Co., VA census December 2 54th District
No. 1718 Polly Jude age 41 b. Grayson Co., VA Olly Jude age 17 female b. Logan Co., VA Nancy Jude age 13 b. Logan Co., VA William R. Jude age 8 b. Russell Co., VA Sarah A. Roberts age 14 b. KY Charlotte Roberts age 10 b. Russell co., VA Peggy Roberts age 7 b. Russell Co., VA Olly Roberts age 85 b. NC
Since William R. Jude shown above was 8 years old in 1850, he was born about 1842. Since Peter Frederick or Jude died before the 1840 census, this suggests William was not the son of Peter. This may explain why William Riley Collins was not identified after the 1850 census with the surname Frederick or Jude, but as a Collins. No other information has been found regarding Polly's daughter Olive "Ollie/Olley/Olly" Jude. Polly's daughter Nancy Jude married James McHenry Prince in Lawrence Co., KY on 3-29-1855.
Mary's son Andrew "Andy" Collins married Elizabeth "Betty" Smith on September 7, 1845 in Pike Co., KY. He was identified on several census records as shown below:
  1850 Pike Co., KY census
No. 716 Andrew Collins 26 VA Elizabeth [Smith] 24 KY Amanda J. 4 KY Wm. M. 2 KY
Andrew Collins was a close neighbor to Joseph Bevins who was listed in the previously mentioned Pike Co, KY sumbpoena. Since they were close neighbors, it is possible Andrew Collins may have been bound out as a child to be raised by Joseph Bevins.
Mary later moved in with her son Andrew Collins since she was listed as living with her son Andrew on the 1860 & 1870 Pike Co., KY census records.
1860 Pike Co. KY census July 20 Page 87 or 881
No. 398 Andy Collins 31 VA Elizabeth 34 KY Amanda 14 KY Wm M. 10 KY Louisa E. 7 KY Martin 6 KY Sarah A. 4 KY Luvena 3 KY Polly Collins [Roberts] 60 VA

Since Mary was shown listed as "Polly Collins" on both the 1860 & 1870 census, it is possible she may have remarried another man with the surname Collins after her second husband Peter Frederick or Jude died or she may have reverted back to using her first husband's surname. Even though it is possible she may have divorced her first husband and later reconciled with him following the death of Peter, it is unlikely because the previously mentioned subpoena suggests she was a widow.
According to the 1850 Pike Co., KY census Mary's son Jacob Collins was living with Martin Fulkerson.
  1850 Pike Co., KY census
No. 156 Jacob Collins age 26 VA (household of Martin Fulkerson)
As the following excerpts show, he was married twice:
1-11-1847 marriage license Pike Co, KY for Jacob Collins and Elizabeth Ann Cavins. 6-15-1851 marriage license Wayne Co., WV for Jacob Collins and Elizabeth Spaulding.
The 1870 Wayne Co., WV census shows the family of Jacob Collins age 48 and his wife Elizabeth (Spaulding) age 38 and children.
At this time I don't have any additional information on Polly's other son James Collins.
Polly's son John Frederick or Jude who was previously mentioned on the Pike Co., KY order book as John Frederick married Nancy Anne Staton. He was identified on the 1850 Wayne Co., VA census as John Jude age 17 (born Jan. 7, 1832) living in the household of James Starr. According to a story written down by Luemma Crum Robinson for her grandchildren, she confirmed the conclusions made about the family of John Frederick or Jude. The only possible exception was the story about John Frederick or Jude being abandoned by his mother Mary "Polly" (Roberts) Collins-Jude and as a result was rescued from a fire by James Starr. Since there is usually an element of truth to stories handed down throughout the generations, it is possible Mary's husband Peter may have died in the previously mentioned fire. I have done other research on the Dempsey family which led me to some research on the Starr family. According to Starr family history, James Starr did not have any children of his own, but was blessed with wealth and took in children whose mothers for whatever reason were unable to raise them. According to the aforementioned court subpoena John Frederick or Jude was ordered by the court to be taken away from his mother or "bound out" to others to be raised. Since the following census entry shows Mary's son John Frederick or Jude was listed as "John Jude" in the household of James Starr, he was probably bound out as a child to be raised by James Starr:
The following entries for the 1850 Logan Co., VA census should provide some more clarity:
  522 James Starr 52 M Farmer $3,300 VA Rebecca Starr 34 F VA John Jude 17 M VA Joseph Dempsey* 10 M VA 14 Sep 1850
  83 Ruth Starr 33 F VA John Starr 14 M VA Henry Starr 9 M VA Polly Starr 8 F VA Shelton Starr 4 M VA
  * Research supports the conclusion this Joseph Dempsey is a duplicate of another person identified as Joseph Dempsey age 10, son of Andrew & Martha (Starr) Dempsey. Joseph was living with his uncle James Starr because James Starr was the brother of Joseph's mother Martha (Starr) who married Joseph's father Andrew Dempsey.
The following information details conclusions based on all the previous facts mentioned: John Frederick or Jude who was born 1832 was identified on the aforementioned subpoena about 1837 as "John Frederick". Later he was listed as "John Jude" on the 1850 census. His father Peter Frederick or Jude married in 1831 in Pike Co., KY using the name Peter Frederick when he married "Polly" Collins. Collins was the last name of Polly's first husband whose first name remains unidentified. As the 1850 Russell Co., VA census shows, Polly's mother was identified as "Olly Roberts". Olive's surname was Stotts before she married Jacob Roberts; consequently, the maiden name of Peter's wife Mary was Roberts when she first married the man with the surname Collins. If these conclusions are not nebulous enough there is another fact that can't be ignored and may lead to other conclusions. When Peter Frederick or Jude's father John Jude who was born about 1765 and was identified on the 1810 Surry Co., NC census as "John Jude", his nearest neighbor was Peter Stotts; consequently, Peter Frederick or Jude's father John Jude had to be connected somehow to Peter Stotts. In my opinion, John Jude may have named his son Peter after this Peter Stotts, which may imply Peter Stotts was somehow related to John Jude or his wife Mary or "Polly" whose maiden name was Stotts, but according to oral family history her maiden name may have been Jackson. Based on the information just mentioned, it's also possible her last name was likely Stotts. Please e-mail me if you have any thoughts or conclusions on all this information.
