Notes
a. Note:   Lived in Salmon River (another name for Pleasant Lake, Yar. Co.), Liverpool, Nova Scotia. Marriage Bond: 28 Dec 1802, Halifax County, Nova Scotia: Wm Gates Archer and Polly or Mary Smith, spinster, (signed "William G Archer" ). Other name on Bond: John Thompson, Cooper.
'JOHN ARCHER had 18 sons and 4 daughters. WILLIAM GATES ARCHER, the eldest son, went from Maine to Liverpool, N.S., and there m. a Miss Mullhall. Two of their children were Henry Archer and Elizabeth, wife of Joseph Bullerwell, all of Salmon River. William Gates Archer was a mason by occupation, and in 1805 he came to Yarmouth and superintended the construction of the wall for the "salt pond dyke," Nathan Savary being the contractor. He d. at Salmon River on the 8th June, 1861, aged 94.' from Yarmouth Nova Scotia Genealogies by George S. Brown.
"William Gates, son of John Archer, married Mary Mulhall. John Archer, of Cornwall, England, was impressed into the navy. Subsequently he settled in Cherryfield, Maine where he married a Miss Tupper and raised a large family. Their eldest son, William Gates Archer, moved to Liverpool, N.S., where he married. Later he moved to Yarmouth, N.S. and he died in Pleasant Lake, in 1861." Diary of Simeon Perkins, 1804-1812, p. 194.
Entry for Wednesday, Feby. 7th, 1810, " I forgot to mention that on monday, the 5, Mr. Gates Archer made me a Stone Stove in my Counting Room Chimney which Seems to Answer very well. It is a Newly discovered Stone. They are at the Beaver Dam in great plenty. He makes grave Stones of them & Says they polish exceeding well." Diary of Simeon Perkins, 1804-1812, p. 194.
Feb 11, 1810. Mr (Gates) Archer preaches at Mr (Benj) Parker's and, I understand has a large Congregation. The House Crouded full, there being no publick meeting at our chapel, nor at Mr. (John) Payzant's, probably occasioned more to attend Mr Archer. It is said his preaching appears principally calculated to encourage the Baptist persuasion.
May 3, 1810: ... Mr. Gates Archer had a Meeting at the House he has bought of Cornwallis Moreau. I understand he had about 50 hearers, old & young. He professes to be a Baptist, and is said to be ordained by a Mr Craige, John Newett, and John Lock, at Ragged Islands. What authority they have for ordaining, I cannot say.
Thursday, November 1, 1810, "Archer makes an attempt to cure my Sons Chimney from Smoaking by altering the Backs but it has not much effect. He designs to try what covering the Drafts will do as that in the Cellar is covered and carries very well." Diary of Simeon Perkins, 1804-1812, p. 257. Numerous entries at this source.
