At the peace, he went from New York to Shelburne, Nova Scotia, where the Crown granted him one town lot. He was twenty-three years of age, and unmarried," from Biographical sketches of loyalists of the American Revolution with an Historical Essay by Lorenzo Sabine, Vol. 2, p. 590. "Minddert Vanhorn, son of Richard Vanhorn and Patty, his wife, of New Ark in the Province (now State) of New Jersey, was married in Liverpool to Susanah Harlow, daughter of Robert Harlow and Jane, his wife, on the thirty-first day of December in the year, one thousand seven hundred and eighty-eight." Vital Records of Liverpool, N.S., New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol. 127, p. 56. -------------------------------- The following from The Diary of Simeon Perkins: "Mindert, son of Robert and Patty Van Horne, of Newark, New Jersey, went to Shelburne, N.S., at the age of 23, as a Loyalist settler. He moved from Shelburne to Liverpool in 1784. On December 31, 1788, he married Susannah, daughter of Robert and Jane (West) Harlow." Footnote, p.148, Diary of Simeon Perkins, 1797-1803. Entry for Monday, Nov. 16, 1789 ..."I agree with Minard Vanhorn to Work on my Vessel Building, till She is Raised, at 5/ pr day, & find himself Victuals. I find him 1/2 pint Rum pr day, to begin tomorrow," and for Tuesday, Nov. 17, 1789..."Minard Vanhorn begins to work on my Vessel Building. Mr. Bangs Sons, Joseph & Thomas, with Vanhorn, are all the Gang." p. 506, The Diary of Simeon Perkins, 1780-1789. Tuesday, Dec 22d. 1789.."Have my Gang of Timber Cutters in the Woods. Minard Vanhorn Cut his Knee about 2 O'clock, So he could not work. Mr. Bangs Sent Stephen Snow home with him." p. 512, The Diary of Simeon Perkins, 1780-1789. June 10, 1790 ..."I begin to work on my ship again. Joseph Bangs, his sons Thomas & James, & Minard Vanhorn, Wm Cheever, and William West. John Day was released to work for Capt. Hopkins. He is to be at work tomorrow." Oct 7, 1790..."Give Minard Vanhorn a deed of Town Lots Nos 1 & 14 in letter B, and a quit claim of No 13, which was Thomas Foster&s & I expected was taken in execution for me, but do not find it in my deed." Sept 26, 1791..."Perry & George carting hay to barn, & then go to Wm Murray for shingles to lay on the store. Mindart Vanhorn is at work shingling. They git ten thousand shingles from Murray." Oct. 4, 1791... "Josiah Whittimore, & Silas West, with Vanhorn, are at work on my store. Whittemore only 1/2 day." June 4, 1792... "I begin to frame my new kitchen. John Miles, Master workman, & Lemuel Drew Junr, work all day. Mindart Vanhorn half the day." June 6, 1792... "Miles, Vanhorn, Drew & Silas West at work on the kitchen." July 10, 1793... "The Court of Oyer, and Terminer, etc, opened at 10 O'clock A.M. The Prisoner set to the bar. The Jury Impannelled Alexander Godfrey, foreman, 2 William Murray, 3 Thomas Murray, 4 William Ford, 5 Mindert Vanhorn, 6 Michael Hulit, ..." Thursday, Feb. 7, 1799 "At Evening Mindert Vanhorn Arrives from Lunenburg by Land, and reports that one Smith, of Lehave, who lately arrived from Halifax, told him that he Saw Capt. Harding there; that he had been dismasted, and was taken off the wreck, & carried to New York, from thence he got to Halifax, & was coming in a Yarmouth Vessel." p. 148-9, Diary of Simeon Perkins, 1797-1803.
