Nova Scotia: widower, age 61, born Oct 1849, trader, living with Mary Fletcher, age 66 (sister-in-law) as housekeeper. Listed as carpenter, Arcadia, NS in McAlpine's Nova Scotia Directory 1890-97. Ran a wood factory called 'Amial R. Brown & Co.', in Arcadia, until 1866, when it was taken over by Thomas Baker, William Bridgeo and W.V. Brown (Amial's brother). Amial went into a merchant business with Thomas Baker and William Bridgeo, called Baker, Bridgeo & Brown, Arcadia, In July 1878, Amial took over the business naming it 'Amial Brown & Co.'- info from research by Ross Whitman. Marriage VR: Yarmouth, Yar. Co. Nova Scotia, Jan. 25, 1879, Amial R. Brown (to Lizzie Cl. Fletcher), age 28, carpenter, residing in Arcadia, born in Argyle, parents- Charles (a farmer) and Abigail, witnesses Mrs. Rachel Goudey and Mrs. Emily Clark. Death VR: Arcadia, Yar. Co. Nova Scotia, died Nov 3rd 1914, age 65 yrs. 1 mo., residence- Arcadia, merchant, married, born Argyle, Yar Co, burial -Arcadia. Gravestone inscription: IN MEMORY OF AMIAL R. BROWN DIED NOV. 3 1914, AGED 65 YEARS (his wife's inscription is on same stone)- from photo by Ross Whitman. May be named after cousin, Amial Rogers Richards, son of mother's sister, Bethiah, who died May 1848. Obituary (newspaper clipping, source unknown) : "Arcadia lost a valued citizen on Tuesday morning in the death of Mr. Amiel Richards Brown at the age of 65 years. He was a merchant, but retired from business about two months ago. Although he has been in poor health for the past year, his death came as a great shock to his many friends. The deceased was highly respected and will be greatly missed in our midst for his genial and kind heartedness. He was a valued member of the Baptist Church in Arcadia. The late Mr. Brown was twice married and is survived by one son Ross L. of Hanover, N.H., and one daughter, Mrs. R. H. Redding of Hebron by first marriage, and a widow, formerly Miss Eva Hersey; also a brother, Mr. W. V. Brown, Beaver River. The funeral took place this afternoon, 2.30 o'clock, with interment at Arcadia."
