Note: m Valentine Brown, for some years an active and energetic citizen of Berwick, died at the home of his daughter, Dr. Mattie B. Shaw, in Windsor, on Tuesday, March 9th.Mr.Brown, who was well and widely known throughout Nova Scotia, was a native of Argyle, Yarmouth County. In his years of early manhood his love for adventure led him far afield. He visited the Pacific Coast in the late fifties, being on service in a United States war vessel, the same one, in fact, whose unauthorized seizure by a British official in 1859, led to strained relations between Great Britain and the United States. The question of the boundary between the United States and British Columbia, which was the cause of the difficulty, was, as a result of the seizure referred to, settled by arbitration, the then King of Prussia, being the arbiter, and the result being, of course, in favor of the United States. Mr. Brown afterward was for a time in the employ of the Hudson Bay Company in which employ he crossed the Rocky Mountains on horseback. After his return from the west Mr. Brown, in 1870, became a member of the firm of Baker, Bridge and Brown, of the Arcadia Factory, of Yarmouth, from which he retired in 1876. He was afterward active in the organization of the Yarmouth Building Society and the Yarmouth Mutual Life Insurance Company. He was also quite prominent in temperance work, appearing at one time as the purchaser of a large quantity of liquor which had been seized for an infraction of the Customs laws and which, having legally passed into the ownership of Mr. Brown, was burned near the Yarmouth Railway Station. Mr. Brown was one of the promoters of the South Shore Railway, the first inception of what is now the Halifax and Southwestern. In 1890, he invested in land in Berwick and, in June, 1893, removed to this town, where he purchased and, for a time, resided in what is now known as the Freeman Block. He built the house in which Mr. H. G. Lyons now resides, which was his home for the greater part of the time he was a resident of Berwick. The book, Markland, by R. R. McLeod, was projected by Mr. Brown, who organized the company which published it.In May, 1910 after the marriage of their youngest daughter, Agnes, Mr. and Mrs. Brown removed from Berwick. They visited the west, spending some time in Oregon. Returning from there they took up their home with their daughter, Mrs. Corning, at Beaver River, Digby County, where Mrs. Brown died in May, 1914.Since Mrs. Brown's death, Mr. Brown has resided in Windsor with his daughter, Dr. Mattie B. Shaw, wife of Dr. H. M. Shaw, of Marshfield, Oregon, who came to Nova Scotia to care for her father in his declining days. A few weeks ago, he suffered a stroke of paralysis, which has resulted fatally. The remains were taken on Wednesday last to Beaver River for interment beside those of his devoted wife. Mr. Brown leaves one son, Mr. William Frank Brown, of Seattle, Wash., and five daughters, Mrs. Corning, of Beaver River. Mrs. Abbie Wells, of Boston, Mrs. Alma Curry, Dr. Mattie Shaw and Mrs. Agnes Smith, of Windsor. These have the sincere sympathy of hosts of friends in the loss that they have sustained."
