Notes
a. Note:   600\tx6160\tx6720\pardirnatural\f0\fs24 \cf0 In the History of Ventura County (written by Sol. N. Sheridan, Volume I, \par published in 1926 by the S.J. Clarke Publishing Co., Chicago), there is \par reference to the "rough riders" of California - the vaqueros. At the \par time of the Civil War, these skilled horsemen formed a cavalry squadron \par under the command of Don Andreas Pico (a brother of Pio Pico, last \par Spanish governor of Alta California). By 1864, four troops had been \par formed for service in the Union Army's defense of the newly admitted \par California (1860). Troop C, under the command of Antonio M. de la \par Guerra, was formed in Santa Barbara. Each horseman rode his own steed to \par the gathering place in San Pedro, where they could select new mounts if \par desired (though many retained their own). From San Pedro they went by \par sea to San Francisco, then by steamer to the mouth of the Colorado River, \par where a paddle-wheel met them for transport to Fort Yuma, AZ. Ramon \par Durazo was listed in that Company C's Muster Roll as a private. Also \par listed in the same roll were privates Leandro Juarez, Francisco Lugo, \par Antonio Olivas, Juan Ygnacio Valencia and Jose Maria Valenzuela (among \par others). Pedro Cota is listed as a Sergeant, and Abran Ayala as \par Corporal. Company C served two full years, mustering out in 1866. \par \par \par \par \par \par \par }
