Notes
a. Note:   Letter to David Myers from son-in-law Peter J. Detter, married to David 's daughter Rebecca Myers
  Camp, Near Petersburg, Va
  March 27, 1865
  Friend David Myers,
I have the pleasure of replying to your letter which reached camp this mo rning. It appears you and Lewis Detters are busily engaged in taking h ay to market. I was out at the Division Hospital a few days ago, and as t he cars came along I saw they were packed with hay. I was wondering wheth er that is some Pennsylvania crop. Perhaps some that you and Lewis to ok to Hanover. Well, that is an article that our Government horses must h ave, you would be astonished to see the Horse feed such as corn, oats, a nd hay that is shipped up here. But now I will see about our subsistenc e. We draw fresh bread every other day which is baked out of Fortrez Monr oe. Baltimore MD. You may think how much it takes only for the Army of the Po tomac which consists of over one hundred thousand men. Indeed a person th at knows nothing of army affairs can form no idea how much labor is requir ed to keep it up as it should.
I will not dwell any longer on the subsistence subject. I noticed in yo ur letter that you have still vistiors and plenty of neighbors. I think y ou always had your full share of visitors and friends. You quoted the pas sage of Scripture as follows:
"Bless them that curse you. Do good to those that hate you and pray for t hem that despitefully use you."
I would now only say if the people of the United States were all Christian s, then this war would not be. But then look back upon the times when G od threatened Sodom and Gomorrha. Did He not give them ample time to repe nt. But no, they would not. And what was their doom. *Destruction.* Let us e xamine the present condition of affairs that men are in. In particular t he Leaders of the South. Were they not admonished and entreated time a nd again to come back into the Union. And have their priveleges their ins titutions as they had before. But no they would not. Now I ask what wi ll be their doom. They have of our Prisoners refuse to exchange them a nd starve them. No theirs is not this lamenting. Sorrowful to have friends their who we k now came out for the good of their Country, again I know that the peop le in the North are in a degree wicket yet. Rebels who fall in our han ds are treated well as regards the subsistence. They are always fed wel l. Well now we will apply the passage of Scripture "Love them that hate yo u." Do not our Government extend the Hand of Friendship to them daily and s ay Come. And you shall have pardon. No they will sooner be destroyed entirely. Indeed, David I often have to think of the common class of people in the S outh. They must suffer with the guilty. They are in some parts in a star ving condition. I heard of late that the poor class of people in South Ca rolina are sifting the flour out of the bran. So they get something to ea t. I pity them from the depth of my heart. But what good can I do them. And now since they lost the coast forts, their Communications is cut off. From other Nations and connection from Richmond SC(?) Indeed I can't see t hat they can stand it much longer. How can they, where will they get the ir ammunition from to fight with. I believe sincerely and honestly that t he Rebellion is tottering on its last lingering legs. But my friend, it c annot end too soon for me. And if it is tommorrow I am just as tir ed of it as is nessessary to be for any man. And I know that you are. A nd I believe that every honest man in the North or South would like to s ee an end to this Rebellion. Well what more shall I say. Nothing transpir ed here of late of any account. My constant wish and desire is for the he alth of those we have left behind. I often think of past times. We are a ll well here all the boys that came with me. Do not forget the soldie rs in the field. Remember them in your prayers. and by and by if it is God's will, we wi ll meet again. Be of good courage, let not the draft trouble you. When y ou write again, please let me know how much your tax will be. If you s ee Lewis Detter tell him I was looking for a letter from him this long tim e. Don't forget and write soon again I am always anxious to hear from y ou and family. A few more lines and I am done. The weather is pretty cold here just now. I think this morning is the coldest morning we have had since we are here.
As ever I will remain Your friend until death Peter J. Detter My respects to the Family and friends in general.
  Write soon. Soon.
