Herbert Scoby of the OaklawnBaptist Church in Memphisofficiated, and burial was in the TrezevantCemetery under thedirection of the Brummitt Funeral Home.Mrs. Yanceywho celebrated her 103rd birthday in May, diedThursday at the home ofa daughter, Mrs. M. J. Newbill ofTrezevant. She had suffered a strokea few days earlier.Born in Halifax County, Virginia, shortly beforethe Civil Warbegan, Mrs. Yancey was the daughter of the late Jamesand MarthaLack Newbill. Her father was killed in 1863 defending thecityof Richmond. She came to Carroll County when she was 9, andhadlived here up until two years ago whenshe moved withanotherdaughter, Mrs. H. W. Argo to Memphis.Mrs. Yancey was the widowof Charles Thomas Yancey, Trezevantfarmer who died in 1902. She hadbeen a member of the TrezevantBaptist Church for 90 years, havingjoined when she was 12 yearsold.Besides Mrs. Newbill of Trezevant andMrs. Argo of Memphis, sheleaves two other daughters, Mrs. W. B. Holmesof Martin and Mrs.Jesse Humphreysof Huntingdon; a son J. H. Yancey ofRed Bay,Ala: 30 grandchildren, 71 great grandchildren and 17 greatgreatgrandchildren.Pallearers were six of Mrs. Yancey's grandsons: J.C. Yancey ofRussellville, Ala: W. B. Holmes of Knoxville, Roy Yanceyand RoyKing Argo of Memphis: Morris E. Baptist Church.Burial willbe in the churchcemetery. Brummitt Funeral Home atTrezevant has charge.Mrs. Yancey, who was 103, died at 7:30 amyesterday at the homeof her daughter, Mrs. M. J. Newbill ofTrezevant, after anillness of two months. She leaves more than 125directdescendants.She was born in Halifax County, VA, and moved toCarroll County,TN when she was 9. She had lived there until moving toMemphistwo and ahalf years ago where she made her home withanotherdaughter, Mrs. J. W. Argo of the Kingston address. In 1960when Mrs. Yancey was celebrating her 100th birthday, shesaid sheremembered very little about the Civil War except thatsoldiers came toher home and took the horses that drew thefamily's carriage. At thattime, she attributed her longevity to"eating everything I wanted". Sheviewed the advert ofelectricity as the greatest achievement of herlifetime. Herfather, James Newbill, was killed in 1863 defending thecity ofRichmond.She was the widow of Charles Yancey who died in1902.She was amember of Trezevant Baptist Church 90 years, a memberof theWomen's Christian Temperance Union.She also leaves two otherdaughters, Mrs. W. B. Holmes ofTrezevant and Mrs. Jesse Humphries ofHuntingdon, Tenn.; her sonJ. H. Yancey of Red Bay, Ala; 30grandchildren, 75 greatgrandchildren and 15 great greatgrandchildren.
