Note: LOSSMAN --- Dr. Robert T. Lossman, a pioneer in laboratory medicine who established the first clinical laboratory at Munson Medical Center in 1938, passed away suddenly Sunday evening. Dr. Lossman served as pathologist at Traverse City State Hospital from 1938 until his retirement from practice in 1973 and as pathologist at the Munson Medical Center. He was 69 at the time of his death, having been born Feb. 25, 1905 in Chicago, Ill., to Herman and Henrietta Lossman. Following graduation with honors from the Loyola University School of Medicine, Chicago, in 1930, he accepted a residence in psychiatry at the Traverse City State Hospital. During his period of training he became interested in the relatively new field of pathology. He attended the University of Michigan where he received a masters of science degree of pathology in 1937, and then in 1938 established the first clinical laboratory at Munson Medical Center. He also assisted in the establishment of laboratories in Cadillac, Gaylord and Northport. From 1938 until his retirement in 1973 he served as pathologist at the Traverse City State Hospital. He had obtained further training in clinical pathology at Wayne State University in 1947-48. He received his boards in anatomic and clinical pathology from the American Board of Pathology. A member of the Grand Traverse-Leelanau-Benzle County Medical Society, he was also a fellow in the College of American Pathologists, a member of the American Association of Blood Banks, and an active member in the American Society of Clinical pathologists and the Pan-Pacific Surgical Association. In 1944 he received a citation from the United States government for his service as chairman of the Selective Service Board of Grand Traverse County. Dr. Lossman attended St. Francis Catholic church. First married to Mary Sarudy, who passed away in April 1962, he then married Agnes Ogden Clark May 9, 1964 in Traverse City. She survives him. They resided at 6874 Peninsula Drive. Besides his widow, Agnes, he is also survived by a daughter, Barbara Lossman of Deepwater Point, Acme and two stepsons, Henry O. Clark of Traverse City and Lyman H. Clark of Washington, D. C. Friends of the family may call at the Reynolds Funeral Home, Traverse City. Funeral Mass will be said 11 a.m. Wednesday at All Faiths Chapel with Fr. Edwin J. Frederick as celebrant. Dr. Lossman will be buried at the Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Memorial may be directed to the Munson Medical Center. Traverse City Record-Eagle - 22 Apr 1974
