"Hay was born in Brushton. Then the family moved to 7740 Bennett Street, Pittsburgh. Hay never went to high school. He did well at mechanical drawing in school and heard that you could get ajob as a tracer (tracing blueprints onto cloth) at Westinghouse. So he quit school and applied. They weren't hiring tracers at the time, so he got ajob as a runner. He sat on a bench in a line with others. When something needed to be done, the first one on the bench did it, and so on down the line. Later he became an order boy. They would get the paper with the customer's order on it, go to the book, get the number of the the desired articles, and fill the order. After about a month he hurt his foot. Then his Sunday School teacher got him a job painting numbers on unpressed steel. It was awfully cold and he used to sit in the metal shack, waiting for metal to come.
Later he joined the Navy. He had been interested in flying and wanted to serve the Air Force, but they didn't accept him . He was an Electrician, 1st class, in the navy. The naval base where be was stationed had submarines. There are pictures of the barracks, submarines, and interiors of submarines. In 1918 with Pere and again in 1919 he visited the Bogart family in Haverstown, New York. There are pictures of the Bogerts and their boat on the Hudson.
During Hay and Ruth's marriage they ran a dairy operation, and had a milk and egg route in Beaver Falls. They raised chickens for eggs and broilers. They also raised some pigs. Hay moonlighted at Union Drawn. They purchased their first and only tracton, a John Deere, when Raymond returned from World War II. Prior to that the farm was operated with horses and the milk route was run using a horse and carriage.
They retired from the dairy operation in the 1950's. The farm was sold off lot by lot. A portion was wold to build the Chippewa United Presbyterian Church. Hay served as treasurer until he lost his eyesight to glaucoma. The rest of the farm was condemmed by the school district for Blackhawk High School in the 1970's.
