 "His mother was from Canada. Dick had rheumatic fever. The doctor's decided he couldn't walk to school in Denver, the altitude was too high. He lived with his Aunt Grace and Uncle Ben for the 8th grade. He finished school in Colorado. He had two years of college, he wanted to be a forester. The depression came and the bank he had his savings in failed. He left school and went to work at Aunt Grace and Uncle Ben's hardware store in Ridgeway, Ontario. Aunt Grace paid his way to business school in Canada. They hoped that he would stay on at the store and he would inherit it someday. They never had children . Dick's girl friend's father got him ajob at the Chambers Bus Company in Beaver County. They used truck chassis and built buses. His nickname there was "Cowboy" because he was from Colorado. Chambers was located at the bottom of Steffen Hill on West Mayfield. Dick boarded on 6th Avenue in Beaver Falls. Dick broke up with his girl friend. Dick worked as a welder at Chambers. Then he went to Jones and Laughlin in Alliquipa as a first class welder and also did sheet metal work. He worked as a sheet metal worker at J & L. He went to work there in 1940 and retired in 1975 at the age of 62. He farmed the old Winterburn farm on the side. Grace and Dick met through Amelia Brown (later Mrs. Robert Rhodes) . They built their house at 140 Winterburn Road in 1942. They had saved $1,000 for materials from Grace's teaching job and Dick's income in the first year of their marriage to build the house.
