Note: Perry Samuel Johnson was the only child of James Johnson and Sarah Nettles. He was born in March, 1878 (this is a guess as we are unable to find a certified record of birth, However, his death certificate shows he was 43 years 4 months in July of 1921 therefore birthmonth is March) and grew up on a farm in Doniphan Township, Ripley County, MO and later in Griswold, MO. (See Citation 1 below) In April, 1898 when he was 20 he enlisted in the US Volunteer Infantry in during the call to arms for the Philippine - American War. He is shown on the 1900 US Census in Battan Providence, Philippine Islands as a Private, Company "B", 38th Regiment, USV. A history of the actions of the 38th may be found at Savage Wars of Peace, Case Studies of Pacification in the Phillippeans, 1901 - 1902 by Robert D. Ramsey III, Long War Series, Occassional Paper, Combat Studies Institute Press, Ft. Leavenworth, KS URL http://usacac.army.mil/cac2/cgsc/carl/download/csipubs/ramsey_24.pdf (07/2013) Pvt. Perry S. Johnson located on the 1900 US Census, Co B, 38th Reg, Vol Inf, USA based Battan, Philippine Islands. Lists his home town as Griswold, MO, which is in Oregon County, MO very near Doniphan, Ripley County, MO where he was born. According to his marriage record his father and mother were living in St. Louis, MO in July, 1908. (See Citation 2 Below) ******************** Philippine-American War 1899-1902 (1906) a war between the United States and Filipino revolutionaries from 1899 to 1902; the insurrection may be seen as a continuation of the Philippine Revolution against Spanish rule. The Treaty of Paris (1898) transferred Philippine sovereignty from Spain to the United States but was not recognized by Filipino leaders, whose troops were in actual control of the entire archipelago except the capital city of Manila. Although an end to the insurrection was declared in 1902, sporadic fighting continued for several years thereafter. ******************** Pvt. Perry Johnson would have returned to the US in July of 1901. Upon return to the states, he was honorably discharged 5 July 1901 acccording to US Enlistment Records, He re-enlisted on 31 August 1901 in the regular US Army as a private in St. Louis, MO and was assigned to the Coastal Artillery Corps. His enlistment records show that he was stationed at Ft. DeSoto, FL, Ft. Levenworth, KS and Ft. McKinley, ME bewteen 1901 and 1917. In 1908 he was stationed at Ft. McKinley, ME where he met Patsey AnnTufts and married on 16 July1908. A review of his marriage certificate and the birth certificate of his only son, Perry Tracy Johnson reveals that Patsey (Pansy) was 3 months pregnant when they were married in 1908. (See Citation 3 below) Perry's enlistment records show that he was traveling as a private citizen between his 30 August 1904 discharge at Ft. DeSoto, FL and his re-enlistment on 22 November 1905 at Dallas, TX a period of 15 months. On November 22, 1917 at the age of 39 (he had to have fibbed a bit on his age as the cutoff for enlistment was 30 at the time), Sargent Perry S. Johnson re-enlisted for a seventh time at Fort McKinley, Maine. At Ft. McKinley he was placed into the 1st Company, and was advanced to Sergeant (again) on January 9, 1918. Sargent Perry S. Johnson served with the 51st Coastal Artillery Corps, 1st Batallion, Company A in Europe during World War I (1917 - 1918)(See Main Military Men citation below). During that service in Battle of St. Mihiel, Sept. 12, 1918 his batallion was mustard gassed by the Germans as it supported an attack by the US troops according to a Citation letter from the commanding General. His death in 1921 was in many ways due to his involvement in that battle. He would have returned to the US in 1918 after the armistisis and was assigned as a Army Recruiter according to the 1920 US Census. Sgt. Perry S. Johnson died on July 18th, 1921 age 43 years 4 months after spending two days at the Ft. McKinley hospital. His Death Certificate lists his cause of death as Chronic Gastritis (one of the many problems soldiers faced after being gassed by the Germans in France) complicated by Alcoholism. The attending physician was Dr. W. C. Whitmore. ********************** A complete history of the 51st CAC is available at: http://freepages.military.rootsweb.com/~cacunithistories/51st_arty.htm with additional information at http://freepages.military.rootsweb.com/~cacunithistories/defeating_the_hun.htm (copy and paste to your borwser address window) Perry's remains were originally buried in the Ft.
