Notes
a. Note:   The first family car which Edwin bought was was a Studebaker. Inez was very provoked by the purchase because she believed it to be a spendthrift item. Why have a car when one could walk or take a cab. Edwin was quite the ladies man and enjoyed burlesque shows and pretty girls, which led to his divorce in June of 1917, with Inez citing adultery as the reason. Sometime after that he went to live in Fairfield, Somerset Co., Maine in a small house on the Kennebec River. He also had a small apartment in S.E. Washington D.C. and used to drive his car to Maine every summer and then down to Florida. He drove until he was 83 when a judge took his license away for failing to stop and remain stopped for stop lights. Seems he had this aversion to sitting at stop lights and would usually pull up, stop, look both ways and then continue when the way was clear. His last occupation is listed as a mechanic for American Oil Company. (Ref Personal History Statement Perry T. Johnson 1949) from which he retired in 1940 at age sixty. His retirement was from Social security at $38.00 each month and the interest on a trust account with a principle of $15,000. set up by his sister, Elizabeth before her death. This paid him about $225.00 every three months. He continued at odd jobs around the Capitol Buliding in Washington, D.C., due to the influence of his friend, Senator Margaret Chase Smith, until well into is late 70s. When he became to ill to work or stay by himself at his home in Fairfield, Maine, he went to a rest home near his daughter Joan Johnson in Vienna, Virginia where he passed away in his sleep on May 16, 1965. His remains were transported back to Maine where he was buried in the Forest Grove Cemetary, Augusta, Kennebec Co., ME.
