a. Note:   y age and remained a member until death. Willis' formal education began at Father King's School (Christ Church), Forrest City with him graduating from Lincoln High School in 1945. In the fall of 1945 Willis enrolled at Philander Smith College, Little Rock, Arkansas. There he met his roommate of four years "Buddy," Edward Norman. This friendship lasted 67 years until Willis' death. On campus he was a very active member of the Vesper choir, voted the most handsome man, and was initiated into the Beta Chi Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated in March 1946. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics in 1948 and later earned the Master of Education degree in 1968 from the University of Arkansas. From 1951 through 1953 Willis served in the United States Army at Fort Chaffee in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Also on June 6, 1951 he married the late Bernice M. McAllister and three children were born to this union. Willis' instructional career began at Childress High School in Wynne, Arkansas following his honorable discharge from the Army. In 1955 the family moved to McCory, Arkansas where he became the youngest principal of Brown School in 1960. He became the principal of the newly built Williams High School which was named for him. Williams High closed in 1967 following integration. He taught mathematics at McCory High School. In 1969 the family moved to West Helena, Arkansas where Willis became the principal at Eliza Miller Seventh Grade for five years. He served as deputy superintendent of the Helena-West Helena School District until his retirement. The school board asked him to return to serve as superintendent which he later retired from that position. He had over 40 years of service in the field of education and he impacted many lives along the way. Willis held membership in numerous organizations on the local, state and national levels.
