  During the Middle Ages Westernhausen was a fief at various times belonging to the Bishopric of W�rzburg and the Electorate of Mainz. Westernhausen was part of the Abbacy of Sch�nthal, 1631-1803 and became part of W�rttemberg in 1803. W�rttemberg became part of Germany in 1815. Westernhausen was in Jagstkreis 1818-1924; it was in Landkreis K�nzelsau 1924-1973; since 1973 it has been in Hohenlohekreis. The states of Baden and W�rttemberg were joined together in 1952. Westernhausen was incorporated into Gemainde Sch�ntal in 1972. In 1910 the population of Westernhausen was 721, in 1933 the population was 709, in 1939 the population was 656, in 2004 the population was 1,103, and in 2006 the population was 1,153.
