Notes from Ed Waymire: About 1808, Jacob came to OH and moved on to IN about 1811. He and his friend, Thomas Beard, entered a quarter section of unassigned land in Wayne Co IN Territory on 5 Mar 1812 which was patented to them on 12 Jun 1812. By separate indentures, dated 14 and 15 Aug 1817, Jacob and Thomas then divided the land into equal tracts of 80 acres each. Jacob also held 3 land grants in Duck Creek Township, Madison Co In which he later sold to his sons Daniel, Jacob Elliott and Noah.

Duck Creek Township, Madison Co., IN
Location: north side of CR 1400N, between CRs 700W and 800W (east of Duck Creek)
Respect for the past comes sometimes from unexpected sources. The Waymire Cemetery, filled with early settlers, is situated on the line between sections 2 and 35 in the southern part of the township. In the mid-1800s, public roads were being planned and constructed. What is now labeled as county road 1400N was originally to run on the section line, and this, of course, would have destroyed the burial ground. When this was realized, plans were changed, and the road was diverted to go around the edge of the cemetery. Thus, when traveling on CR 1400N, one cannot miss the Waymire's location.
Resting at this location is Jacob Waymire, 1781-1857, who built the first steam sawmill seven years before his death. Also, family members Elliot and David were elected, respectively, as justice of the peace and treasurer in the first township elections. These were held in August of 1852 in a log building near this cemetery started by the Waymire's.
One of the few original Waymire stones is that of Henry Waymire. Patriarch, Jacob Waymire has a metal, turn of the century, marker placed by descendents.
The Ritter section, above, shows that the ground around the stones has been sprayed with vegetation killer. This does make for a neat appearance.
Also resting here is Authur Ritter, 1815-1881. His family originally came from Ohio via Wayne County, Indiana, to Duck Creek Township in July of 1848. Mr. Ritter is credited with being the second settler to the area, making the first land entry from what had been the Miami Reserve, and over the next thirty-one years changing that wilderness into a model working farm.
