Miami Union July 15, 1897 JOSEPH C. COPPOCK, an aged citizen of Newton Township, died at his home Saturday evening.
The deceased was born in Union Township in 1812, but in early manhood he moved into Newton Township and resided there almost continuously until his death. He was a man of strong character, a close student of current events, well-informed on the topics of the day and exercised a wholesome influence in the community where he lived. As a loyal and ardent republican, his word had great weight in the councils of his party and, when in his prime, the influence of no other leader was greater in nominating conventions.
He possessed a keen sense of right and his integrity was unimpeachable. The public recognition of these qualities made him justice of the peace, the duties of which office, he discharged honestly and efficiently.
His nature was kindly and genial and he enjoyed the respect and love of a host of friends, who sympathized with him in the closing years of a long and useful life, and who now remember him as a good man, a faithful friend and a noble citizen.
