Note: N695 JOSEPH W. CUSHING Joseph William Cushing was b. 1-23-1903 Webster Groves, Mo., the seventh child of Edward Fuller and Anne Branch Cushing. He attended Webster Groves schools, then Washington University, receiving his B.S. degree in Business Administration, 1924. He came to Crawford Co. in 1922, for asummer job at Wildwood Springs Resort, newly opened that year, and returned each summer. In1925, he became manager. Elizabeth Zahorsky was b. 2-5-1906, daughterof Dr. John and Beth Silverwood Zahorsky, of St.Louis. She had always spent summers near Steelville at the family's summer home in Pleasant Valley. She received her A.B. degree at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts 1925 andcompleted a "Short Course in Agriculture" at the University of Missouri 1926. After she and Joseph m. 4-23-1927, they built a home on their farm inthe Big Bend of Meramec River, where they have lived for sixty years, The Cushings took part in many civic affairs Joe worked in the Boosters Club, the Masonic Lodge, and the Boy Scout organization, and as County Chairman of the National Foundation forInfantile Paralysis. In 1933, he became director of the Civil Works Administration, a Federal program to find work for the unemployed; he directed the WPA project that built the Yadkin Bridge at Spring Street; in the drought years of1934 and 1936, he supervised the Subsistence Feed program to help farmers save their livestock.With County Surveyor Lindberg, he planned and laid out the Wildwood Hills subdivision on Highway 19. They both worked with Conservation groups to save the Meramec River. Joe was a member and Secretary of Crawford Electric Cooperative for 27 years, and Board member and Vice President of SteelvilleTelephone Exchange for 18 years. He was a Presiding Elder of the Steelville Presbyterian Church and was Chairman of the Building Committee for the new church built 1959.Elizabeth joined the Self Culture Club and worked on many of their civic projects. She was a member of the committee to establish a Public Library in Steelville. The Pathfinder and Quest Clubs joined in this project; the members served as librarians. She served for ten years on the State Board of Missouri Federation of Women's Clubs; was State President, 1956-58.She served for 5 years on the Governor's Committee on Children and Youth, and as Regional Chairman for the White House Conferences in 1970 and 1971. She was amember for 20 years and past chairman of Crawford County Child Care Advisory Committee. The Cushings have three children: Elizabeth Anne married Lawrence Jukofsky, M.D. They have two children, three grandchildren; live on Hilton Head Island, S.C. She works on Civic and Environmental projects and writes a garden column.Joseph William, Jr., married Ann Miller; they have two children, two grandchildren. He is a Chemical Engineer in St. Louis County.Edward John married Carolyn Conn. They have five children, one grandson. He is professor of Ecology and Biology at the University of Minnesota.Over the years, recreation has been, for Joe, fishing and canoeing in the clear Ozark streams, for Elizabeth, the finding and protecting of Ozark wildflowers and woodlands. 172 CRAWFORD COUNTY MISSOURI 1829-1987
