Notes
a. Note:   N7155 Obituary S. Lawrence Jukofsky, M.D. March 13, 1925-April 11, 2015
Larry Jukofsky of Hilton Head, SC and formerly of Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ, died on April 11, 2015. The beloved husband of 65 years of Betsy Cushing Jukofsky, he was born in Hackensack, NJ, son of Isadore and Rosella Jukofsky. A graduate of Columbia University, NY, and NY Medical College, he did his residency in ophthalmology at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, where he was lucky enough to meet his Betsy, who worked in medical records. They married in 1950. Larry served in the Korean War as a member of the US Marine Corps medical battalion. He is survived by many adoring relatives, including son Michael, daughter Diane, daughter-in-law Irene, son-in-law Chris Wille, sister Corinne Schwibner, sister Audrey Freidman, granddaughter Stacy, grandsons Joseph and Jeffrey and great grandchildren Ryden, Nicholas and Brooklyn. A longtime member of Rotary, Larry was the chief of the Department of Ophthalmology at Pascack Valley Hospital, NJ, where he had a private practice for many years. After he and Betsy moved to Hilton Head Plantation in 1978, Larry practiced ophthalmology locally and was on the staff of Hilton Head Hospital until his retirement in 1989. With Betsy he was a charter member of Bear Creek Country Club and an avid golfer. He also spent thousands of hours patiently fishing the island's lagoons, while writing many books in his head. He is the author of two published books: The Final Victim (Graveyard Publishing, 2010) and Borne to Die (Second Wind Publishing, 2014). Unpublished are many lovely songs that Larry composed, as he was an accomplished pianist, one of those rare individuals who could hear a tune and then instantly render it into an evocative piano composition. He was a talented artist, and for more than 30 years his photography has accompanied Betsy's garden column in the Island Packet. A celebration of Larry's long and remarkable life will be held at a later date. Donations in his memory may be made to: Hilton Head Humane Association, 10 Humane Way, Hilton Head Island, SC 29926 or Rainforest Alliance, 233 Broadway, 28th floor, New York, NY 10279.
