Note: N7152 Vivien Hammond Cogswell January 6, 1912 — July 5, 2009 Vivien Hammond Cogswell, a lifelong resident of the Portland area and loving wife and mother, died Sunday of the effects of aging. She was 97 years old and had remained active until her recent decline in health limited her activities. For about 32 years, until their retirement in 1970, she assisted her husband Philip Cogswell Sr. in owning and operating the Hammond Hardware Co., located on Southeast Foster Road near 67th Avenue. The store was a well-known fixture among area businesses. Vivien was born Jan. 6, 1912, in Portland to Herbert and Blanche Hammond. She graduated from Franklin High School and also attended what is now Oregon State University. Three brothers preceded her in death. She married Philip Sr. in 1936, and they purchased their hardware store from her father two years later. She successfully juggled helping with the store with raising three children: John, now living in Boise; Philip Jr. of Salem; and Carol of Boulder, Colo. Vivien was active in the Southeast Portland Opti-Mrs. Club for many years and also with the then Central Presbyterian Church in the Laurelhurst area, where they lived for many years. She enjoyed gardening and also playing bridge with her friends, among many interests. After her husband died in 1990, Vivien moved to Willamette View retirement community, where she lived until her death. In addition to her children, survivors include three grandchildren, Peter, Megan and Carey Cogswell; and five great-grandchildren, Ellery, Elizabeth and Everette Cogswell and Nathan and Noah Camuso. A celebration of life will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 11, 2009, in the Commons Building at Willamette View. Vivien 's family suggests remembrances be contributions to the Willamette View Foundation in her memory. [The Oregonian, Portland, Oregon, July 9, 2009]
