  During the Civil War he was drafted into the Army. He was a Private in Company F. Reg. 103 Infantry. On 20 April 1864 he was captured by the South while in Plymouth, North Carolina. He was taken to Andersonville Prison in Sumter, Georgia. He died on 17 August in 1864 from scorbutus or scurvy (a deficiency in vitamin C. He was 44 years old.
