Note:   N1689 Editorial Writing Contest Entered By Six Aspirants Two Best Editorials Are Submitted Several Fairhaven students participated Tuesday, January 28, in an editorial writing contest, which is being sponsored by the National Quill and Scroll Society. The contestants werre given a choice of two topics, which came in a sealded envelope. the envelope was not to be opened by anyone until participants were ready to write. Forty-five minutes was the amount of time allotted for the writing. the two winning editorials, which were written by Viola Winterburn, and Kenneth McPherson, were on the same subject, "Forbidding State Athletic Tournaments." The other subject was "The Progress of Aviation." These teo articles were typed and sent to the district contest, the deadline for which if February 4. the winning essays in the district will be sent to the National headquarters in Iowa. - "Editorial Writing Contest Entered By Six Aspirants", Fairhaven Record, South Bellingham Washington, 7 February 1929, page 1, column 4
  Promoted and Engaged Kenneth McPherson, who attenede high school here some years ago and who has been connected with radio stations KGIR in Butte for the past few years, has been appointed general manager of a new stattion, KPFA, to be opened in Helena, the state capital, about Sept. 26. Announcement has been made in New York of the engagement of Miss Elva Louise Lacey, of that city, and Mr. McPherson, the wedding to take place this fall. - "Promoted and Engaged", undated clipping from an unidentified newspaper.   Kenneth, Not Cameron It is Kenneth McPherson, not Cameron McPherson, of Seattle, who is in charge of Senator Wheeler's headquarters at the Chicago convention. Kenneth is a son of the late A.C. McPherson and Mrs. McPherson, the latter now living in Puyallup. He attended the Stemilt Hill and Wenatchee schools and also studied at the University of Washington and the Seattle Y.M.C.A. radio school. He has been doing radio announcing and mechanical work for nearly ten years in Seattle, Butte and Helena. He is now in charge of KPFA "The Captial Station" at Helena, and through political comments he became acquainted with Senator Wheeler, who asked him to go to chicago to take charge of his headquarters during the convention. With his wife and her mother, he visited the apple blossom festival here last year. - "Kenneth, Not Cameron", undated clipping from an unidentified newspaper.   Rotary honors MacPherson K 0 MacPherson secretary of the Helena Rotary Club, will be honored by Rotarians Wednesday when he retires from that position which he has held since1958. MacPherson was a pioneer in the radio business in Helena, opening the first station here Sept. 28, 1937. He was president of the Helena Chamber of Commerce in 1946-47, was named boss of the year by the Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1956-57, has served as city-county zoning commission chairman, was the first chairman of the area-wide planning organization, serving until Jan. 31, 1978, and has served as a member of the Red Cross Board. MacPherson was graduated from Fairhaven High School, South Bellingham, Wash., in 1929 and received his first radio operator's license from the YMCA Trade School in 1930. Later he attended the University of Washington for a year. His first radio job paid $40 a month in cash and $40 in trade, but he never received the cash. In 1930 he came to Montana and was employed by radio station KGIR in Butte. Then he worked in Nampa, Idaho; Seattle, Billings, Missoula, and once more in Butte before coming to Helena and opening the station which was the predecessor of KBLL. Later he operated the Helena Cab Company, 1943 and 1944; operated MacPherson Motors, 1949 to 1951; opened radio station KOOK in Billings in 1951, then returned to Helena where was manager of KCAP from 1952 through 1957.   Kenneth 'KO' MacPherson Pioneer radio broadcaster and businessman Kenneth "KO" MacPherson, age 91, passed away May 31, 2003, of natural causes at the Cooney convalescent Home. He was known for his "strong, booming voice" announcing various sporting events in Helena in the 1930s and 40s. KO was born Sept. 14, 1911, at the family home outside of Wenatchee, Wash., to to Archibald and Estelle (Allenbaugh) MacPherson. He graduated from Fairhaven High School in South Bellingham, Wash., in 1929 and attended YMCA Trade School where he received his radio operator and engineering licenses in 1930. KO began his radio work at KFQW and then moved to Butte and began working at radio station KGIR on Dec. 14, 1930. Continuing his career, he worked at all the KXL stations in Missoula, Butte, Great Falls and Billings. After moving to Helena in 1937, he started the first radio station here known as KPFA in the log cabin on 11th Avenue. This became known as the Montana Log Cabin, later becoming KXLJ and is currently KBLL. KO married Elva "Dolly" Lacey while in Butte and they moved to Helena. Their marriage was blessed by the birth of son Elton MacPherson, and daughter Sandra "Sandy" (MacPherson) Kovich. The two of them established several other businesses to include the Helena Cab Company 1943-44, MacPherson Motors, a Packard and Jeep Dealer ship 1949-51. He was active in real estate ownership and management from l955 to the present. In December of 1956 he married Helen Knox. KO was a Rotary member and secretary for over 30 years. He was a member of the United Commercial Travelers - Montana Council #68 and served as grand secretary for Montana, Utah and Idaho. He was selected as Boss of the Year for Helena JCs and an active blood donor for the American Red Cross. He joined the Helena Lodge #3 A.F. & A.M in 1964. KO was initiated into Helena Valley Scottish Rite of the Algeria Temple and later was honored by the Scottish Rite Bodies in 1978 by being given a "Red Hat" and elected the Court of Honor (KCCH)" in recognition for his work in civic organizations. He was preceded in death by his wife Dolly in 1955 and wife Helen in 1976; brother Art; and sister Blanche. Survivors include son Elton (Diane) MacPherson; granddaughter Lori (Keith) Rawlinson; great-grandsons Liam and Aidan all residing in California; daughter Sandra of Helena; grandsons James (Tami) Schaeffer of Seattle and Steven (Melissa) Schaeffer of East Helena; great-granddaughters Ellie of Seattle and Saisha of East Helena; great-grandsons Steven and Braydon of East Helena. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 5, at Retz Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 6 at Retz Funeral Home. Cremation will take place following the service. Private interment will take place at Resurrection Cemetery.
