  John arrived in Gorham, Ontario County, NY in 1798 and took to himself a home on lot 53. McPherson had learned the trade of weaver in his youth, and resumed its practice when settled on his wild lands. from the "History of Ontario County, New York" 1876. He claimed he was an Irish weaver because he had not signed the oath of allegiance to the United States. In 1810 he signed the oath and stated he was born in Pennsylvania.
  Liber 14 Page 543 Ontario County New York This Indenture made the twenty fifth day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and ten between William Dillon of the County of Ontario and State of New York and Phebe his wife of the place first part and John McPherson of the County and state aforesaid of the second part witnesseth that the said party of the first part for and in consideration of the sum of two hundred and eighty seven dollars and fifty cents to him in hand paid by the party of the second part the receipt whereof is hereby confessed and acknowledged have granted bargained sold remised and aliened and confirmed and by these presents doth grant bargain sell remise release alien and convey unto the said party of the second part and to his heirs and assigns forever all that certain tract or parcel of land situate in the County of Ontario and State of New York being fifty one acres north west half of lot number thirty eight in township number nine in the second range ---- of five acres on the west line beginning at the south west corner running north one hundred and nineteen rods and eighteen links to a stake and stones thence east sixty six rods and thirty links thence south one hundred and sixteen rods and eighteen links thence west sixty rods and four links to the place of beginning together with all and singular the hereditaments and appurtenances therein belonging or in any wise appertaining and the reversion and reversions remainder and remainders rents issues and profits thereof and all the estate right title and claim and demand whatsoever of the said party of the first part either in law or equity and to the above bargained premises with the said hereditaments and appurtenances and to hold the said described lands with appurtenances to the said party of the second part his heirs and assigns to the sole and only proper use benefit and behoof of the said party of the second part his heirs and assigns forever and the said party of the first part for themselves their executors and administrators do covenant grant bargain and agree to and with the said party of the second part his heirs and assigns that at the time of the ensealing and delivery of these presents they are well seized of the premises above conveyed as of a good sure perfect absolute and indefeasible estate of inheritance in the law in fee simple and that the above bargained premises in quiet and peaceable possession of the said party of the second part his heirs and assigns against all and every person or persons lawfully claiming or to claim the whole or any part they will forever warrant and defend. Be it remembered that on the eighth day of September eighteen hundred and ten personally appeared before me Nathaniel Gorham one of the Judges of the court of common pleas William Dillon and Phebe his wife who to me are personally known acknowledged that they executed the within instrument as their voluntary act and deed the said Phebe being by me examined personally and apart from her husband acknowledged she executed it freely and without any fear or compulsion from her said husband. I have examined the same and finding therein no erasures interlineation except those noted ----------- recorded.   William McPherson, John's father was a Tory, and the family followed the feelings of William. John did not own property before 1810 because of the New York law stating that no Alien could own land in the State of New York. The siblings of John McPherson migrated to Ontario Province, Canada and many of the McPherson in the Gainsboro area are from this McPherson line.
  John McPherson signed the Oath of Allegiance in 1810 in Ontario County, NY. He stated therein that he was born in Pennsylvania.
