Notes
a. Note:   N50 Matthias and Rachel Jane came down the Ohio river by boat to Cave-in Rock or Shawneetown, Illinois; then overland to Moore's Prairie, Jefferson County, where they settled in grove a grove of Maple trees. By this time they had four children. Their journey was between March 1853 and August 1855- probably in 1854 because their son Thomas was six years old (according to his obituary) when they came to Illinois following Rachel Janes's father, Danial. The McPhersons and many other familys made maple sugar from the sap extracted from the large maple trees each year. The name of Sugar Camp Church evidently came from the name of the place where they camped on the outings at the maple grove. Matthias was a farmer and buyer of cattle and other livestock in Hamilton and Jefferson Counties in Illinois. He enjoyed people and was quite successful in his business.
