a. Note:   During his time in the Civil War he went from private to fourth sergeant to third sergeant. He was taken prisoner at the fall of Vicksburg and like thousands of other paroled "rebs" became AWOL on the confederate muster, probably returning home.
  Gabe built a house, which still stands though unoccupied, about one mile north of Slunge Community on the road to Detriot, Alabama. Reportedly appendicitis cut short Gabe's life in 1891 and he was buried in Lann Cemetery, which is a mile or so west of Splunge. Ellen lies beside him, but her stone gives only her birthdate and no one was able to supply her deathdate for this history. I beleive she was gone before the 1900 census was taken and I know she was alive in 1893 when her son Lucian was married.
