Note: Husband and Wife Die Monterey, December 25, Rosario Duarte a Mexican Veteran and a Resident of Monterey since 1844, and his wife Altagrasia Duarte, died within a few hours of each other and will be buried together on Thursday. Mrs Duarte had been beyond hope for a number of day's and Worry hastened her husband's death. Duarte was 87 years of age. He had lived in Monterey 63 years. Mrs Duarte was 78 Years old, a Native of Monterey. The couple had been married 57 years. Duarte was the first proprietor of the Washington Hotel. Death of R. Duarte Monterey, Monterey County, California Died Last Night and wife is on her Death Bed Rosario Duarte, a resident of Monterey for 63, years, died at his home at the corner of Scott and Alvarado Streets last night At 11:30 O' Clock. His wife Alta Gracia Duarte, is dying and is not expected to live through the Morning. She is suffering from Heart Disease, and has been unconcious since 7:00 O' Clock Sunday Morning. Rosario Duarte was one of the oldest Pioneers in Monterey. He came here in 1844. Mr. Duarte served in the Mexican War, and was one of the three veterans still living here. He was the proprietor of the Washington Hotel, famous for the earliest Hotel in this City. Later engaged in the Merchandise Business and the in the Wholesale Fish Business. Mr. Duarte was the father of 18 children, ten of who are now living as follows. Mrs Josefa Nocefore, Santa Maria Duarte, Espirion Duarte, and Mrs Mary Sapin, Manuel Duarte, and Mrs Rosa Frietas, Mrs Rufina Duarte, Frank, Joe And Louis Duarte. Rosario Duarte was 87 Years of Age. Death resulted in Apopolexy. December 24 ,1907 Double Funeral Mr. and Mrs Duarte Die a Few Hours Apart-- Will be buried together. The Bodies of Rosario Duarte and wife Altagracia de la Torre Duarte, lie side by side in their home on Alvarado Street, opposite the old Custom House, and Thursday Morning at 10:00 O' Clock will be buried side by side. The couple that was man and wife for more than Three Score years will not be parted even in death. Their funeral will be a double one. The death of Rosario Thursday night at 11:30 O' Clock, was followed by that of this wife Yesterday Morning shortly after 6;00 O Clock. Mrs Duarte had been in fair health up to last Sunday Morning. At that time she went to Church and at that time at become over exerted. She had an attack of Heart Trouble and lasped into unconscieousness, from which she never regained consciousness. She was a Native of Monterey and 74 years of Age. Her father Joaquin de la Torre, was sent here from Spain as secretary for the Catholic Missions. It was his duty to distribute all the Supplies, to the Various Missions in the State. He held this position for Twenty Eight years. Mrs Duarte's mother was Maria de los Angeles Cota, one of the first white children in Monterey. One of Mrs Duarte's brothers was the first Justice of the Peace under Mexican Rule and and another one was Captain of the Mexican Troops here . Rosario Duarte was a native of Santiago, Lower California. His Parents held large Herds of Cattle, and when the American troops took some of the Stock for meat, the Mexican Authorities began Persecution. This led to Mr. Duarte enlisting on the United States Sloop of the War Warren, and serving through the Mexican War. In 1847 he came to Monterey and has resided here ever since. For ten years Mr. Duarte was the proprietor of the old Washington Hotel, then for twenty years was in the Butcher Business, and later the General Merchandise and Fishing Business. Both Mr. And Mrs Duarte had many friends in Monterey among the early settlers. The Funeral Services will be held Thursday morning at 10;00 O' Clock from the family house and then to San Carlos Church, where the Mass will be celebrated. December 27, 1907 Monterey Daily Cypress
