Notes
a. Note:   astillian Family Prominent in Early Days. Monterey July 23 ,1898 Chrisostimo Castro one of Monterey's Quaintest figures, a relic of the old Mexican regime in this state and a member of a branch of the celebrated Castro family, fell dead on a street last night. Christostimo Castro was a Southern Californian by birth and lived in Monterey for 30 years. He married a sister of Rosario Duarte, the head of the fishing industry of Monterey and for years a prominent figure hereabouts. Castro was Known to everyone in this section for the past few years as "Old Diamond Castro" because of a Hallucination from which he suffered some years ago. An Italian died and left his cane to Castro, saying in the cane Castro would find the key to his wealth. Castro tried every way to find the "Key", but to no avail, and , finally, becoming disgusted, he sold the cane, to Thomas Oliver (Thomas Oliver was the son of Maria Trinidad Calistra Duarte married to George Oliver sister to Crisostomomo's wife Encarnacion Duarte). Oliver, thinking to play a joke on the old man, knocked the head off the cane and pretended to find some very fine diamonds inside the head. He of course never produced the stones, but Castro with the disapointment and persistancy of age, brooded over his suposed loss until it became a mania with him, On all other subjects he preserved a keen intellect until the end. 1870 Crisostimo Castro Age 43 White Male Cattle Raiser rl. est. 2.510 Born in Lower Father and mother of Foreign Birth California Mexico Encarnacion White Female age 44 Keeping House Born in Lower California Mexico Trinidad Castro White Female Age 16 at home born in California Dalia Castro White Female age 13 at home born in California Manuel Castro White Male age 9 at home born in California Jose Castro age 58 Farm Laborer 1.500 real estate Born in California Henry Lewis age 50 born in England White male Farm Worker On the 1852 There is a Crisostomo Castro age 25 married to Encarnation Age 25 and a daughter Manuela age 5.
