Notes
a. Note:   n las Partidas de los Matrims. de esta Mision de San Carlos de Monterey December 21 or 31, 1854 Rosario Duarte H. l. de Jose Ygnacio y Josefa Castro, With A. Huntington Mission Records states that Cayetano Duarte's Origin Is San Antonio, Baja California Sur. That is Off Highway 1 only a few miles from Santiago where Jose Ygnacio Duarte is From. There is no record of Cayetano's parentage but, it is assumed it was Joseph Maria Duarte by his first wife Juana Gertrudis De La Cruz Valenzuela. Cayetano and Leandro are listed together often as Sacrament to Weddings, at Mission San Gabriel, so they are most certainly brothers. I haven't been able to locate a copy of Jose Ygnacio Duarte and Maria Josefa Castro's Marriage Record to see if the parents are listed. It is possible that he is a son of Juan Joseph Duarte and Thomasa Maldonado. There are many Duarte's from the Alamo, Sonora area but, it is Cayetano's Huntington Mission Record that States he was from San Antonio, Baja California That links him to this family of Duarte's. The refugee's are listed on the 1850 Monterey Census from Lower California. Santiago, Baja California Sur, Mexico was founded as Mission de Santiago el Apostol in 1723. The Town is a lovely Farming Community and is divided by a large Arroyo de Santiago, and surrounded by Fields of Mangos, Corn, Papaya, And Citrus Trees. Santiago is about one hour from San Jose del Cabo. In early August 1848, Lieutenant William Sherman, Adjutant General to Governor Mason, ordered the New York Volunteers to return to Alta California to be discharged. The ship-of-the-line Ohio and Second Class sloop Warren were assigned to act as troop transports, and the storeship Southhampton and second class sloop Lexington as Refugee transports. The Lexington had 130 Refugee's on Board when it sailed from La Paz to Monterey. The Ohio left La Paz On September 1, 1848 and San Jose del Cabo on September 6, 1848 with the last of the Volunteers and 350 refugees on Board. Among the Refugees were Maria Mapara Ruiz, who later became Colonel Burton's wife. The Ohio Reached Monterey on October 9, 1848. The total Number of Baja Californios who made the move is not known. Rosario Duarte's Newpaper Obituary states that he as a Native of Santiago, Lower California. , In my file there is a Jose Antonio Feliz b. about 1796 married to Maria Reyes. She is listed also as Maria Espinosa but her marriage record has her parents names. The Feliz are closely related to the Castro's. Came from the Same area as our line of Castro's. She is listed very near Trindad Duarte married to George Oliver and Juana Duarte married to Jose Maria Acevedo on the 1860 and 1870 Monterey County, Census. One of her children possibly Vincent married a Duarte. Our Ancestor's most likely descend from inhabitant's of Mission Santiago De Los Conras. This Mission Was establisted in 1721 and lasted until 1795 When the Domincan Period Ended. Then they were moved to San Jose Del Cabo. The Pericu Indians sacked the Mission in 1721 and it was rebuilt in 1724. Many of the Records from this time Period Were taken back to Spain by the Priests or simply Discarded, Lost, or Destroyed. It is Very difficult to Trace Lineage During the time Period.
