Notes
a. Note:   According to "Old Settlers' Tales" Charles Simon, cousin to Louis Constant Simon, came to Kansas in 1858, directly from Switzerland. His wife, Louise, and son, Louis, joined him the next year. He settled on a farm and built a log house. Louise died about 1863 and he then remarried to Mrs. Mary Martin, of Turkey creek, near Seneca, Kansas, after about a year. Mary came to the area with two children, J.C. Martin and Minerva Martin (later married to Mr. Swisher). Charles had three children by his first wife and two boys by his second wife. After his death about 1870, his widow married Baptist Gilson in 1875. She sold the farm to Ernest Descombes and Henry Morel in 1870. Charles was the first of the Swiss immigrants to get a team of horse, which he traded for.
We know some of these dates are incorrect. Louise and the children arrived in New York on October 28, 1856 in the company of the Vautravers family and two Zurchers. Charles must have come earlier.
The 1860 census for Red Vermillion, Nemaha County show F.C. Simon (35), wife Louise (35) and son Louis (8) all born in Switzerland, plus Annie E. (born abt. 1854 in Indiana) and Annie A. (born abt 1857 in Indiana).
