Note: The name of Sarah has been inferred from the census record in 1840 of the only Benton family in Athens County, Ohio. Sarah Benton is 40-49 years old and has three children in the household: a boy 10-14 (Benjamin, born 1829?), a girl 5-9 (Maria, born 1834?), a girl 10-14 (unknown) and a girl 15-19 (Sarah Emmeline, born 1824?). The census states that one person in the family works in agriculture. In 1850, the mother is either dead or remarried and the three of the four children are living together in Athens County. There is no Benton family recorded in the 1830 census for Athens County. There is a John Benton family living in Redfield, New York, in 1820. None of the three children from our family would yet have been born. There are six children in this family, with a father and mother whose ages would coincide with the family we are seeking. By 1830, this family is not in the records, but most of the children would have been old enough to be married with their own households. Oswego County is the home of several Benton families, but we are unable to make any connection at this time. It might be possible to make associations with some of the neighboring families from Athens County, Ohio. The following names appear on the same page of the census: Samuel Hill, Luther Scott, Isaac Moultripp, J or I Spaulding, James Rice, James Abrams, James Culver, John Bones, Stephen Ward.
