  Eli served as a corporal in Company D of the 36th Virginia Infantry of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War. He enlisted 27 May 1861 in Logan County, West Virginia. The following is his entry in ancestry.com's American Civil War Soldiers: "Enlisted as a Private on 27 May 1861 at the age of 18. Enlisted in Company D, 36th Infantry Regiment Virginia on 27 May 1861. Promoted to Full Corporal (Estimated day of Promo) on 15 Nov 1862." Eli also served in The Logan Wildcats, a home guard militia unit formed by Devil Anse Hatfield.
  In the 1870 Wyoming County, West Virginia Census, Eli and Nancy and their children reside in Huffs Creek District. Eli is a farmer whose Real Estate Value s $200.00. 20-year-old Henry Blankenship also resides with them.
  In the 1880 Wyoming County, West Virginia Census, Eli and Nancy and their sons reside in Huffs Creek District. Eli is a farmer with neuralgia. The record states that both of his parents were born in Virginia. Their niece, 5-year-old Rosa Lester, born in West Virginia to parents both born in West Virginia, resides with them.

In the early 1970's, a reservoir, the R. D. Bailey Lake, was built in the area and all of the burials, except two which were relocated to a different site, were reinterred in the Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny, Wyoming County,West Virginia.
