a. Note:   John immigrated from Wales via Liverpool, England, with his parents, sister, Hannah, and a young brother to the United States aboard the Alabama. The family arrived in New York City, New York 27 May 1842.
  In the 1850 Meigs County, Ohio Census, John, age 15, is his widowed mother's oldest son. He resides with her and his siblings. He is already working as a coal miner.
  John was a coal miner.
  John served in the Union forces during the Civil War. His cemetery marker bears a veteran's emblem, 1861 - 1865. According to Meigs County, Ohio Soldier Discharge Book, Volumes 1 and 2, page 111, John B. Thomas served as a private in Company H, 53rd Regiment of the OVI (Ohio Volunteer Infantry). The record states that he was born in Wales and that he was age 26 years at enlistment. John initially enlisted for three months in May,1861 and was discharged 28 August 1861. He reenlisted 20 October 1861 and was discharged 7 February 1865 with a surgeon's certificate of disability. John participated in 10 battles and 40 skirmishes. He received a gunshot wound on 27 June 1864 during the battle of Kenesaw Mountain, Georgia. The wound never healed and was the immediate cause of his death.
  In the 1880 Meigs County, Ohio Census, John and Anna and their children reside in Pomeroy. The record states that both of John's parents were born in Wales.
  In the 1900 Meigs County, Ohio Census, John resides as a border in the home of Clinton and Anna Stahl. The record states that both of his parents were born in Wales and that he immigrated from Wales to the United States in 1841. He is identified as married but Ann and several of their children reside in a different household.
  John's death record states that he was aged 73 years, 2 months at the time of his death which was caused by "wounds of the rebellion".
  John's obituary in the 16 September 1908 Pomeroy Tribune - Telegraph (Pomeroy, Meigs County, Ohio) is as follows:
  "DEAT OF LINCOLN HILL CITIZEN
  John B. Thomas, an old soldier residing on Lincoln Hill, passed away suddenly Wednesday morning, Sept. 9, following an illness of only a few days, from the effect of a gun shot would received in battle.
  Mr. Thomas came to Pomeroy 60 years ago at the age of 13, making him 73 years old. He is survived by a wife, 10 children and 28 grandchildren. The children present were...
  When the war broke out Mr. Thomas enlisted for three months in the 18th O.V.I., Co. H, 53d Regt. He was discharged Aug. 28, 1861 and on Oct. 20, 1861 he again enlisted and was discharged Feb. 7, 1865. He took part in 10 battles and 40 skirmishes. He was wounded at the battle in Kenesaw Mountain, Ga., June 27, 1864.
  This wound never healed until a short time ago, and was the immediate cause of his death. The funeral services were held from his late residence, Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Thos. Turnbull, with interment in Beech Grove c[sic]emetery.".
