Note: Israel enlisted in the Union Army 30 March 1864 at the age of 17. He was a member of the 65th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry which was part of the Sherman Brigade. Israel served until the end of the Civil War and was discharged 30 November 1865. He saw action in Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia Campaigns, participating in the battles of Kenesaw Mountain, Resaca, Atlanta, Franklin, Nashville, among others. Shortly after returning from the Civil War, Israel built his home located at what is now 12360 McCallum Road in Lexington Township and resided there until his death. Though he was not a carpenter by trade, Israel was quite skillful with tools and, according to family tradition, was quite proud of the fact that he was able to build every building on his farm. Though Israel learned the trade of shoemaker in his early years, he never professionally practiced that trade but was, instead, a farmer. He did, however, make footwear for his family and, sometimes, for neighbors. In the 1880 Stark County, Ohio Census, Israel and Angeline and their daughters reside in Lexington Township next door to Israel's parents. Israel is a "farm laborer". Israel was a member of the Methodist Evangelical Church at Marlboro and of the John C. Fremont Post G.A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic) in Alliance. According to his obituary, Isreal became ill from a throat infection on Saturday, 12 April 1919. Erysipelas developed which resulted in his death. Israel's daughter, Annabel, was the informant for his death certificate. The record states that he was a farmer married to "Angeline Gaskill" at the time of his death which was due to "Facial Erysipilas". The record identifies his parents as "Abram Gaskill" and "Esther Maxwell".
