Notes
a. Note:   H4800
Note:   Martin's research in The Hazen Family Genealogy states that Ellis servedfour years as a Lexington Township trustee and four years on the Stark County Agricultural Board before being elected to a term as Stark County Commissioner.
According to The Hazen Family 1976 compiled from family records by sisters Dorothy Freshley Davis and Mary Helen Freshley Hagan, Ellis was "...elected to office of Township Trustee for four years - and in Oct. 1876 [this may have been in 1878] elected to office of County Commissioner" (page 2).
Ellis and his family were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He owned a 226 acre farm in Lexington Township, Stark County and during his life is said to have amassed a comfortable fortune. In the 1860 Stark County, Ohio Census, his farm was valued at $4,800.00 and his personal estate was valued at $1,000.00. His farm was located on the present site of the southeast corner of the McCallum Avenue and Route 619 intersections in Stark County.
In the 1880 Stark County, Ohio Census, Ellis and his wife and their children, his father-in-law, Ellis Wickersham, and a 13-year-old "Josephine Gonnes" resided in Lexington Twp. where Ellis is a farmer. The record states that his father was born in Pennsylvania and that his mother was born in Virginia.
