Note:   In the 1880 Athens County, Ohio Census, John and Mary and their daughter, Metta, reside in Canaan Township next door to Mary's parents and siblings. John is a farm laborer. The record erroneously states that John and both of his parents were born in Virginia.
  In the 1900 Athens County, Ohio Census, John and Mary and their children reside in Ames Township next door to Mary's parents. John is a farmer. The record states that both of John's parents were born in Ohio.
  In the 1910 Athens County, Ohio Census, the widowed John and his son, Leslie, reside in Bern Township. John is a farm laborer.
  John and his second wife, Etta, lived near Elliott, Morgan County, Ohio.
  John's grave is marked by a piece of sandstone with his initials carved into it.
  The informant for John's death certificate was his second wife, "Etta Strahl Martin". The record states that he was a farmer at the time of his death which was due to being kicked by a horse in the stomach.
