Note:   According to Martin's The Martin Family (1980),
"In the late 1890's, Ed was working as a flagman in one of the larger railroad yards...One day, he jumped off one train to flag another train. He was too far over on one of the tracks, and a train coming from the opposite direction hit him, throwing him about twenty feet up in the air, and forty feet down the track. When people got to him, one of his eyes was out of its socket, laying on his cheek. Someone had covered him with a blanket, thinking he was dead, when another person saw his foot move. He recovered, as he had no serious injury, but his eye always afterwards pointed somewhat off to the side."
Ed was 5'6" tall and weighed about 145 lbs. He served in the Spanish-American War. Ed worked most of his life as a coal miner and, at one time, he and two partners owned their own mine. At various times, Ed worked for the railroad and in the oil fields. Due to a back injury sustained in a mine cave-in, he was confined to bed for the last two years of his life. The main cause of his death was heart disease, but the back injury and a gangrenous leg, resulting from an injury on an oil rig, were contributing causes.
