Note:   Family tradition states that a friend of John's who was living in Ohiopersuaded him that land was readily available and inexpensive in Ohio. As a result, John and Ann moved to East Township, Carroll County, Ohio between the time of their marriages in 1825 - 1827 and 1830. John is listed on the 1833 Carroll County tax list as living in Township 14, Range 4, Section 7.
  Family tradition also states that John had trouble making a living in Ohio and went to Chicago to find work. He was supposed to have found work there and been killed on the job.
  The Joyce Family History written by Benjamin Joyce in 1901 states that John left his family in Carroll County and went to Chicago when his daughter, Ann (born 1836) was a baby and never returned.
  In the 1840 Carroll County, Ohio Census, John's wife, Ann, is listed as the head of the house. In the 1850 Carroll County, Ohio Census, Ann is still listed as the head of the family. Her occupation is given as "farmer" and the value of the farm was $1,800.00.
