Note: H2853
Note: In the 1850 Carroll County, Ohio Census, John and Nancy and their two children reside in East Township. John is a farmer. In the 1860 Daviess County, Indiana Census, John and Nancy and their children reside in Van Buren Township. John is a farmer born in Ireland whose Personal Estate Value is $200.00. According to family tradition, while in town, having driven the wagonthere with some grain to have ground into flour, in Daviess County, Indiana, John was drafted into the Civil War by Union soldiers. Because of his advanced age, the circumstances of war were especially hard on him and he died in Indiana shortly after being mustered out of the service. Soon afterwards, Ann and their surviving children moved back to East Twp., Carroll County, Ohio. An exhaustive search of Indiana Civil War records has provided the following data about John McGary serving from the state of Indiana as it found in the Report of the Adjutant General of the State of Indiana: Vol. 5 page 561 - McGary, John date of muster - 20 Jan 1862 musterd out 16 Feb. 1865 page 533 - McGary, John residence: Loogootee date of muster 1 Feb 1862 remarks: "Transferred Co. 'I', 52nd Reg., re-org. As per my search request in July 2003, the National Archives has no record of a pension application from him or any of his survivors in his name. On 10 November 2003, the Reference Librarian at the Carnegie Public Library in Washinton, Indiana made the following reply to my request for a search on the McGary Family in VanBuren Twp. circa 1860: "Unfortunately, I have not been able to find much informaiton for you regarding the McGary family in our area either. I have looked in the cemetery books, marriage indexes, and what Catholic records that we have available here at the library and am not finding anything. They were living in VanBurren township at the time of the 1860 census and as far as I know, there was no Catholic Church in that area. They would have had to go a good distance to church either in Daviess County or cross into Martin County. Those catholic cemeteries in Martin County do not have any burials for McGary, etiher and we do not have access to their church records." On December 9, 2003, the following message was received from Judy Neff at the Diocese of Evansville (Indiana) in response to my request for a search of Diocesan records for the McGarry/McGeary family: "Stephanie, I have completed a search of the records for St. Peter Church, St. Mary's, and St. Patrick's which were the only churches in Daviess County from 1850-1870. I find no record for any McGary or McGeary. There were many, many Irish names but not this one."
