a. Note:   Age 13, Halbert, Martin, IN, 1860 census. Age 33, District 150, Halbert township, Martin county, IN, 1880 census. William enlisted for one year in the Civil War, Dec 1864, at Columbus, IN. His description; age eighteen, height five feet five inches, eyes grey, hair sandy, and occupation farmer. He was a substitute for Henry Kanimon, drafted from Bedford. On 11 Jan 1865, the surgeon found him incapable of performing the duties of a soldier and stated his disability was present at time of enlistment. William filed for an Invalid Pension in 1890, but was rejected with the statement "soldier was a rejected substitute who never was in service. In 1892, his attorney appealed to the Secretary of the Interior with the statements that William was examined and held in service until 27 Apr 1865 when he was discharged at Indianapolis and if not mustered in, it was the fault of the US as they held him in service for a period of four months and twenty six days. His post office was West Shoals, IN at the time of appeal. He stated he was unable to earn a support by reason of disease of chest, stomach, eyes and left leg.[3263042.ged]
